Alva L. Cohn
SCHENEVUS — Alva L. Cohn, 80, of Schenevus died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a short illness.
He was born on Feb. 12, 1918, in East Worcester, the son of Orra and Leona (Clapper) Cohn.
He married Freda M. Watson on March 13, 1937, in Albany. She predeceased him on Feb. 29, 1984.
Mr. Cohn was a lifelong area resident. He was employed with the D&H Railroad for 17 years and then with the New York state Highway Department of Transportation in Maryland as a supervisor foreman, retiring at the age of 62.
Mr. Cohn enjoyed music, especially playing the piano, guitar and harmonica.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Mary Cohn of St. Clarie, Mich.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elanor and Arthur Spranger of Oneonta, Barbara and Richard Peet of Oneonta, and Elaine and Marc Bresee of Milford Center; grandchildren, Roger Cohn and his wife, Laura, of Ohio, Ronald Spranger and his wife, Kristen, of Schenevus, Kelly Benjamin of Oneonta, Tammy Colegrove and her friend Dan Carey of Savannah, Jo-Ann Sakowski and her husband, Mike, of Savannah, David D. Doig and his wife, Darleen, of Savannah, Corinne Bresee of Milford Center; stepgrandchildren, John Bresee and his wife, Becky, of California, and Kimberly Bresee of Alexander, Va.; eight granchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.
Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Mr. Cohn to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155; or the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 311 Turner St., Utica, N.Y. 13501.
Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
