Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello members of the COHN surname list. Let me introduce myself. My name is
Laurie Lovelace and I am the new administrator for this list. I acquired the
list through the adoption board at Rootsweb on Wednesday night and have
spent the day updating information on the subscription confirmation messages
and taglines. In order to help you use the mailing list to its full
potential I have some suggestions to offer, these being:
When posting to this list I would recommend that you place the surnames
you're researching in the subject line. This makes it so much easier for
those scanning the postings and the archives to see who it is you're looking
for. A great help also is to mention the timeframe and some of the sources
you have already checked. In the spirit of sharing on the list, I would urge
everyone to select "reply all" when responding to messages on the list so we
can all benefit from the research. This does not apply to personal messages
or data regarding living individuals.
The gateway between the message board and the mailing list for COHN is open.
For old hands at the mailing lists the following
is not necessary, however for first time list members, what this means is,
messages posted to the message board at this URL
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=Surnames.cohn
will automatically show up on the mailing list. You will be able to read the
posting without actually going to the message board. HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD NOT
RESPOND ON THE MAILING LIST, but click on the URL given in the message to be
taken to the message board. Your response needs to be posted there. The
reason for this, the postings to the mailing list DO NOT automatically go
to the message boards, therefore the person who the original query may never
see the response.
Some reminders to new members of the list:
Send your email to
COHN-L(a)rootsweb.com
There are messages in the archives for this surname dating back to 1999,
this is an excellent resource so be sure to search the archives at
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/cohn
I consider myself fairly easy to get along with and will run the list in a
fairly relaxed manner. However, that being said, I would like to remind
everyone that certain behaviour will not be tolerated on this list, and to
behave in such a manner will result in the offender being
removed/unsubscribed from the list and put on reject status, meaning you
will NOT be permitted to post anything to the list.
These are hard and fast rules found in the Rootsweb AUP so I'm not making
any rules that other lists aren't required to follow.
Such things that will cause your removal are:
1. Your posts should not flame or otherwise harass other users and should be
reasonably on topic for the areas where they appear, and you should
otherwise adhere to the principles of netiquette. Information about
netiquette is available on many Internet sites.
2. RootsWeb's intent is to provide a friendly and, as much as possible,
non-commercial environment. Any activity that involves the exchange of money
requires prior permission from RootsWeb.com. Posting of messages of a
commercial nature may result in your removal from this list.
3. You will receive ONE warning to cease and desist, any argument will
result in removal or moderation. Moderation simply means that all your posts
will come through me for approval BEFORE going to the list.
I look forward to meeting all of you over the next little while. If your
require assistance of an administrative nature please let me know. Other
than that I hope we can all share and learn from each other.

Rootsweb has advised us of server upgrading. This will be ongoing for
awhile. Please do not post queries to the list if you encounter some of the
accessibility problems listed below.
----------------------- -----------------------
-----------------------
To improve site performance, RootsWeb will be upgrading its servers during
the next couple of weeks. As a result there may be times when you will be
unable to access portions of the site. Feel free to continue your research
using other RootsWeb.com or Ancestry.com
o What does this mean for you? Well, it means some servers will be
unavailable during this time unavailable and we are asking for your
patience.
For up-to-date information about the different resources, you can visit
http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ as the move progresses.
For Mailing Lists: When the time comes to move list servers, Rootsweb will
be halting operation on the machine to complete the move. They expect to
have the machines down the least amount of time possible. NO MAIL will be
sent from or posted the your mailing lists. They do not expect to lose any
messages.
For Message Boards: Nothing, unless the board happens to be gatewayed to a
mailing list then the information for mailing lists apply.
For Web Pages: FTP will be down so that changes can't be made to pages until
everything is working correctly on the new servers.
There will be a short time that the pages will not be available as the
transfer takes place.
Currently taking place: The following resources are currently disabled or
will be soon, due to the upgrading: WorldGenWeb, personal websites on our
homepages or virtual servers, death records (CA, KY, ME, TX), and
Personalized Mailing Lists (PML). During the transition, Password Central
may show some incomplete listings, especially for Post-em Notes.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we go through a few
"growing pains."
