June B Adelaide SA Thank you
I have learned the following about looking
for the name COHEN in Russian records:
Because the "H" sound in KOHEN or KAHAN is
spelled with a "G" in Russian, you
would find the name being spelled KAGAN.
Look for the name KAGAN or variants such
as KAGANOVICH OR KAGANOV.
Also, the KAC, or KATZ, stands for the name
KOHEN-TZEDEK. (Tzedek = Tzaddik = righteous man)

Dear Cohen researchers,
My wife's great grandfather Myer Cohen was born
around 1865 in Ostryna (also called Astrin, Ostrin etc.)
near Vilna and Grodno, in Lithuania, Poland, Russia or
Belarus, depending on what date you're talking about.
While the census for Ostrina is not yet available to
me, I have looked at 1858 census records for nearby
towns, and the name Cohen (or spelling variations)
does not occur even once in many hundreds of records.
I know a bit about "Cohen," that it has meaning beyond a
surname, but I was surprised not to find it at all in
the records. Can someone shed some light on this? Were
the surnames in these official records assigned by the
authorities, and thus gladly shed when people left?
Is it hopeless to try to find my wife's Cohen ancestors
in old records?

Dear Becky - Thank you for the message - I am not aware of any Cohen
Lithuanian connection - With Cohens I go as far back as Moses Cohen
(1734-1831) of London, England with commercial and family interests in
Jamaica. I appreciate the e-mail address for Bert Oppenheim and will contact
him - Thank you - Sincerely - Richard Lyman.
Dear London Cohen researcher,
I also have Cohens who are loosely associated with Oppenheim. My Aaron Cohen
came to the US c 1866 and settled in Goshen, Indiana. He was (I believe)
originally from Lithuania, but I do not have a location. His wife was Amelia
Caminsky. Aaron's father, according to his death record, was Charles.
You may also wish to talk with Bert Oppenheim who has written a book on the
Oppenheim family. Since his family is connected to my Caminskys, there may
be a Cohen connection. He can be reached at bert.oppenheim(a)worldnet.att.net.
You may reach me privately at kreegercbi(a)aol.com.
