I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the COGSWELL Family of
Michigan. The first is one of Mrs. L. W. COGSWELL which was taken at the N.
G. King Studio in Lowell, MI. The photograph was likely taken in the 1870's
or 1880's with Mrs. COGSWELL appearing to be in her 30's at the time. Along
with her name, someone has written "Dead" on the back of the photograph. I
believe this is a photograph of Emma SPENCER COGSWELL the first wife of
Luman W. COGSWELL who died before 1900.
The second photograph is one of William COGSWELL which was taken at the
Philley Studio in Lowell, MI, again probably in the 1870's or 1880's with
Will also appearing to be in his 30's at the time. Based on limited
research I was able to gather the following information regarding this
family:
Luman COGSWELL was b. 1836 in Jackson or Eaton Co. MI to parents Seth H.
COGSWELL (b. 1810 in Canada) and Nancy C. BOSWORTH (b. 1808 in MA) and d.
1916 and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lowell, MI. Luman's wife was
Emma SPENCER b. 1843. The couple had 5 children including, Millie H.; Mary
L.; Maud E.; Mable; and Kittie COGSWELL.
William Burr COGSWELL was b. 11 Jul 1846 in MI to parents Robert & Harriet
COGSWELL and d. 21 Jun 1909 according to his gravestone where he is buried
at the Fairplains Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MI. He was married to Elizabeth
"Bessie" MCBOYLE COGSWELL (Jul 1846 in Monquhitter Scotland-d. 1930) on 24
Dec 1867 in La Salle Co. IL. The couple had two children, John b. about
1869 in IL and Harry Angelo b. 1875 in NY.
