Martin Cogswell, born 23 Aug 1796 in Sangate, Vermont, married Maria Tuttle, born 22 Mar 1795, parents of David, Lucia, Edwin (my great great g father) Erastus and Allen. Does this help?

I would love to solve this too. I just need some link to prove that my
Benjamin is the same as the son of John and Tryphena and sister of your
gr-gr-gr grandmother.
I don't know where the court record might be for the estate settlement for
this John, who I cannot identify.. I just found that tidbit of info years
ago on the internet at US genweb, but would like to find the original
source.
It is interesting that Benjamin's son Henry moved to Hayworth, McLean Il
and Philena, his mother is listed in that household in 1880. IL was the
place to go at the time, it seems.

Subject: Re: [COGSWELL] Two John Cogswells & Tryphena/Hannah
Dear Marilyn, It sounds as if we might be following the same line.
The elder Benjamin I mentioned (b 1730 in Coventry, CT - d 1828 in Coventry,
CT) is the 4th generation descended from John Cogswell who came to America
via the "Angel Gabriel" which wrecked near Pemaquid, Maine in 1635. The line
then continues with John 1662-1653, Samuel 1651-c.1700, Joshua 1695-?, and
then this Benjamin 1730-1828.
Son John who marr Tryphena has dates that may be confused with the John marr
to Hannah Roys but was prob b in Coventry CT since his siblings were born
there, acc to a Cogswell genealogy book; some sources say date was 1 Sep
1759. Deathdate = 18 Jun 1837 in VT near Whitehall, NY, but again, research
may be confused.
John/Tryphena's son Benjamin is listed in genalogy sources only as "d in
Oneida Co., NY." Maybe this is your Benjamin. Since families often relocated
in groups, Benjamin is prob the child of John & Tryphena due to the fact
that other children of John & Tryphena located nearby, as follows:
John (Jr.) b 1781 - d 1874 in North Western, NY - appears in 1820 census for
Western, Oneida Co., NY
Sally b ? - d Waterloo, Oneida, NY
Betsy b 1779 - resided near Homer, NY after marriage - d 1855 in MI
(William b 1777 - d Macon, GA and Tryphena Cogswell Martin b 1781 - d Bureau
Co., IL)
Do you have any of the court records for Benjamin as admin. of John's
estate? It would seem that it was his father's estate since his brother John
lived until 1874, acc. to the genealogy book.
Further proof that our lines are linked is that Tryphena Cogswell Martin
married her husband in Lee Center, Oneida Co., NY, and their children were
all born in Lee Center, Oneida Co., NY. The children of John (Jr.) were all
born in "North Western, NY," acc to the Cogswell genealogy. Betsey's and
Sally's kids are not documented whereas William lived in about 5 different
places so his children's birth locations are varied.
I am so excited to have heard from you. Hopefully, we can help each other
solve the mystery of this line. Sharon

Can anyone tell us what John and what Benjamin would be those mentioned in
these records?
1814 Western Owners of Land list, Benjamin Cogswell, John J. Cogswell
1819- 11 Feb- Benjamin Cogswell of Western in Oneida Co. named Admin. for
estate of John Cogswell, who died intestate.
My ancestor is Benjamin Cogswell b NY 1790-99 and probably died before 1850
in Oneida, NY. He married Philena Wright, daughter of Abner Wright....... I
can't determine his parents. His birth time frame would coincide with that
of the Benjamin b. to Tryphena and John, but I can find no record.

Dear Cogswell cousins,
I have run into conflicting information re JOHN COGSWELL who marr TRYPHENA
(Spurrier/Spike/Toles??) and a JOHN COGSWELL who marr HANNAH ROYS. Both
seemed to have lived in Whitehall, Washington Co., NY, abt the 1830's.
Hannah's John named their children in a will dated 1841. Previously, they
lived in Castleton, VT, where 3 of their children were born. TRYPHENA'S JOHN
had children with names that were associated with John's father BENJAMIN &
wife LOIS THOMPSON, but children of both couples overlapped each other, so
Hannah was not wife #2 of John, the descendant of Benjamin (1730-c.1828) &
Lois. TRYPHENA is reportedly buried in Whitehall.
John & Tryphena's daughter, TRYPHENA COGSWELL MARTIN, (my
gr-gr-gr-grandmother) marr William Martin in NY, moved to IL, and is buried
here in Bureau Co., IL.
Am seeking documented evidence re JOHN COGSWELL who marr TRYPHENA and had
children Benjamin, Betsey (Elizabeth?), William, John, TRYPHENA, and Sally
(Sarah?). Any help would be appreciated. Sharon Bittner
