William and James M. was son of Joseph Cogswell he died 1801 in Bourbon Co. KY. I have found a Joseph Cogswell in Bedford Co. VA and Morris Co. NJ. I know there was several court cases in VA. James was in the War of 1812. I think this family may be the one you are looking for..

Wow! There's quite a few George Cogswells. My late husband's father was George Herbert Cogswell. He lived in Canada (New Brunswick area, I believe) and my late husband's name was Herbert George Cogswell. My husband had said that his grandfather had a place in New Brunswick.
George Herbert Cogswell married Elsie Ivy Gallup. She was Canadian also. I don't know if there is any connection.

Researching family history of Julia Cogswell - daughter of Harvey Cogswell partner in the business Walker, Evans and Cogswell - printers to the CSA and printers of Confederate currency. Julia married Benjamin Franklin Evans.
My gggrandfather Isaac Cogswell was born in 1800 in Bath Co. Ky in 1800. His father Jedediah was born in NJ @1765 and is listed on the tax rolls (KY) in 1795.
I have a copy of the Cogswell Family Assocaition book but James is such a common name that it would take forever. Do you have a maiden name for his wife?
