I descend from William Cogswell born 1777 in Mass.(1040 in Cogswell book)
Md. Susanna Beard; William died in Ga in the mid-1800. His son John Cogswell
born 1802 Died before the 1850 census. Lived in Gwinnett co. Ga., which is a
burnt county. His widow is listed with two children Levi Mangrum Cogswell
born 1830 and James Cogswell.
His widow was Martha, mostly likely a Cooper, a daughter of Vining Cooper &
Sarah Hitchcock, of Gwinnett co. Ga. Martha may have died before 1860-can't
seem to find her. Levi Cogswell moved to (Marion co. area) Mississippi and
married Sarah Wallace d/o William Wallace and Rebecca Wheat. Levi & Sarah
Cogswell moved to
Wood co. Texas by 1860. Levi enlisted in the Civil War in 1862. After the
1880 census the family moved to Shelby co. Texas, where they died Levi in
1905 and Sarah 1912. On the 1900 census Sarah is listed as the mother of 7
children, with only 2 still living.
Don't know the whereabouts of James Cogswell. In Wood County there was W.V.
Cogswell also who married a woman named Mary. Another researcher thought this
could be William Cogswell, a brother to Levi. William died in the Civil War,
leaving 1 or 2 children.
Are there any other descendants out there?
