Hi Martin:
...I appreciate hearing from you. It's quite true when you say there seems to be few COGHLAN's out there, searching for their ancestors, making it difficult to find the Irish origins. I too, have a faint trace of Irish blood in me, and wish I could discover a direct tie back to it's Irish roots.
Besides the connection to my Gr.-GrandUncle Bernard Coghlin born in Ireland, Sept. 1836, - there are other Irish branches to my family tree. However, I have had no luck in tracing them back. Bernard is a good example. He springs up, only when he appears in 1868 at W. Derby, England age 32 and marries Lucy Alice PALIN. They had three children, Mabel N., 1871, Bernard W., 1874, and Gerald J.R., 1877; - all born in Montreal, Quebec Canada. The entire family disappears after being listed on the 1901 Canadian Census at Montreal, where the 3 adult children and their parents are listed, living at 151 University Street, Montreal, Quebec. His occupation at that time was listed as a merchant in railway supplies.
Before his marriage to Lucy Alice Palin, in 1868, Bernard COGHLIN was a close friend of my Gr.-Grandfather, Richard PALIN, where both were living in Liverpool, and working together. It appears from family archived letters, that both Richard Palin and wife, Agnes Mary COLES/PALIN, and Bernard COGHLIN and wife Lucy Alice PALIN/COGHLIN emigrated to Canada near the same times. Richard Palin and his brother-in-law Bernard Coghlin, continued their friendship in the new country until Richard's death in 1878.
I really have no idea of where to go from here to continue searching for Bernard Coghlin's three children, and their descendents. This has become a dead end for me, yet surely there must be some further clues from 1901 time-frame onwards! Let's hope that somewhere out there, someone will read our postings and see a connection to their own ancestors.
Any responses will be gratefully received!
Successful hunting to all.....

I have traced back one family line to a John Coghlan, born in Clonakilty in Co Cork in 1808 (march 25 poss). He moved to the UK and married Mary Parsons (b 7 July 1817 in Bristol) in Neath in 1841.Their children were Mary Anne, Thomas John, George Parsons, John Mann (my ancestor), James Judd, Abraham Hamilton, Sarah Maria and Charles.
Does this ring any bells? Also I would be interested to know the likelihood of getting back to the parents etc of John from Clonakilty.
Regards
David Nicoll

Hi to COGHLIN Researchers:
I am still searching for ANY information on my ancestor, BERNARD COGHLIN/COGHLAN, born 1836, Ireland. Not having had any replies to my previous post last year, I am re-posting with renewed hopes.
Bernard married Lucy Alice PALIN, at W. Derby, England in June, 1868. They had at least three known children:
Mabel N. born: 1871
Bernard W. born: 1874
Gerald J.R. born: 1877
The COGHLIN's immigrated to Montreal, Canada, in c1869
Bernard and Lucy are listed on the 1901 Census for Montreal City, ages 62 and 64 respectively.
If anyone has any connections, and/or any further data re this COGHLIN family, I would be very, very excited, as I have searched for several years, and have found little. They were my Great-Aunt and Uncle, and I am anxious to get more
details on their lives, for a family book being compiled.
ANY descendents out there...? ?
Many thanks in advance! - Sincerely,
Ann-Elizabeth Palin: Innisfil, Ontario, Canada

Hi Ugo
I do hope you will be able to help me trace my roots! I am particularly interested in your message re Dr Mallachy Coghlan, who emigrated from South Africa to Alabama. I believe my great, great grandfather came to South AFrica from Ireland. His name was Patrick Malachy Coghlan - married to Gertrude Eileen Mary Hagelthorn and they settled in the Transkei. I also recall my grandfather telling me tales of his visits to Uncle Charles (possibly a brother to Patrick Malachy)in the then Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).
Could there be a connection at all? My grandfather was Malachy Patrick John, he had several brothers (Gerald, Adrian, O'Dillon, Paddy (?) and a sister Barbara.
I really hope I have found someone who is able to throw some light on my ancestry!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Colleen Crause (Coghlan)
