according to my cousin who has a family bible [from after their immigration] they used three different spellings = Coggins, Cogan or Cogans.....
So be flexible - spelling and literacy rates were not like they are now.
I am working on trying to setup a trip to Sligo this coming summer....I would be willing to keep an eye out for your people. Just give me all the known names and dates you have....

Not yet but I guessed it would be Sligo area based on the name as that is the most common area for Coggins. I did find that in one census the family was listed as Coggin, but when you look at the written census I see an s on the end apparently the software did not. I will have to get to Great Britain at some point though because Michael was born in Ireland and my Grandpa John married Anne Fitzsimmons, and her mother was born in Ireland, as was her father. They were also from the Scranton area. But their information is a marginally easier to find.

I am just going to throw this in...
My paternal grandmother was a Coggins - daughter of Timothy [likely Thady] immigrant from Ireland, Co Sligo to be specific. His parents brought him and siblings in 1864/1865 when he was an infant.
Parents were Thomas and Ellen, Andrew and Mary was his paternal grandparents. Other siblings names, in order of birth : Andrew, Patrick,Mary, Martin, Thady/Timothy, Ellen, Winnifred, John Thomas.
Looks like Easkey in Co Sligo...and they lived in Hudson MA... have you gotten them back to Ireland?

Thank you I looked there, found some information. But I could not figure out why I could not find the family prior to the 1910 census. I eventually found the 1900 census and although the photo copy shows Coggins the reader apparently did not catch the s, so I found Michael Coggins married to Mary and with sons James F and John J who have the right birth dates. It lists Michael as being born in Ireland in 1850, immigrating in 1875 and under naturalization it says al which I assume means he was still an alien and not a citizen. He married Mary Ann in 1886. Their children were 9 and 12 so it was after my grandpas birthday in Feb. It lists his occupation as coal miner, so I looking at the listing you sent me again.

Pennsylvania death indices, 1906-1963, are online at:
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=514&objID=1085804&mode=2
If you live in Pennsylvania you can access the death certificates for free at:
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/research_topics/...
If you have Ancestry, you can access the PA Death Certificates at Ancestry.
This assumes that you have a certificate number.
>From the Ancestry home page, click "Search" and "Card Catalog" For title enter "Pennsylvania;" for keyword enter "death certificates."
Next screen choose "death certificates", click "search". The form that comes up has an option of "Advanced Search". Choose that, and on the advanced form fill in ONLY two fields: the year of death, click "exact", and the certificate number, click "exact." Then click Search, and surprise! there is your certificate!
The secret for success is to never use the "advanced" search option
The state of Pennsylvania has uploaded births in the year of 1906 and deaths for the years 1906 to 1961 . The link to the searchable indices can be found at:
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/public_records/2...
Also at this webpage is an explanation of how to obtain non-certified copies of the birth or death certificate for $5 per copy. The link for the form that should be used to request certificates can also be found on this webpage. Go down almost to the bottom where the link is to the PDF form you can print and mail in. Look for the words "download the death application form".

Thank you I assume the date of death is a coincidence then, I suspect finding more information will require a trip to Scranton area. I noted that there was a marriage license issued for Mary Anne Jordan and Michael Coggins but there is no date of marriage in the PA records on line so they may not have actually married or may have married in the church and did not return the license. Since i can find them in the census for 1910, I know I have the right family but I cannot find anything else on them. I did find a michael who came here with his mother at age 5. But I am having trouble finding the rest of the family.

I have a list of the fatalities from the Belmont Mine, Tonopah, Nye County, Nevada fire, 1911Feb23.
There is no one with the surname COGGINS listed. Most of the fatalities were Slavic miners.

Thank you but the Coggins mentioned there are the wrong ages for my family. In the 1910 census the family was listed as
Mary A Coggins Head F 40 Pennsylvania
James F Coggins Son M 20 Pennsylvania
John J Coggins Son M 18 Pennsylvania
The census states Mary Anne was born in US but Michael was born in Ireland
Mary Anne was listed as married not widowed. Michael would have been about 52 in 1910 meaning he was born in 1858 and too old for all the Michaels on your listing. I did note that James date of death in the PA records is the same day of the Tonopah, Nevada Belmont fire that killed 17. Feb 23, 1911. James would have been 21. But I could not find a list of persons who died. I also noted that many of the sites state that some of the miners had come from the east.

Hi looking for connections and information on
Michael Coggins who married Mary Anne Jordan. In the 1910 census Mary was head of household but married, her children were James F Coggins age 20 born in 1890, and John J. Coggins born in 1892, he was my Grandpa. He said that James died in a mine accident. On the Lackawanna records I can find that James F. died on 2/23/1911 he would have been 21, Michael have died died in Erie in Jan 1912, and Mary in June of that same year in Scranton. This is consistent somewhat with my Grandpas story that his dad and brother died in the mines and shortly after his mom also died. Mary was born in PA but her parents were born in Ireland. I do not know where Michael was in 1910. My grandpa was a very tall tale teller though, and an alcoholic so not all of his facts may be true.
