Sylvia Fran Brindley Coggin
Sylvia Fran Brindley Coggin died Friday, Dec. 31 at the Cherokee Baptist Medical Center in Centre, Ala., after a short illness. She was 91.
Fran was born in the Gum Springs community of Morgan County to the late Euvie Bowen and Hanby Watts Brindley on Aug. 24, 1913.
A graduate of Morgan County High School and Athens State College, Fran was the valedictorian of her class. She married Edward Thomas Coggin of Athens and bore two sons, Thomas B. Coggin and John D. Coggin. For 35 years,Fran Coggin taught in the Limestone County and Athens City Schools and is fondly remembered by her former students.
After being widowed for several years, Fran became reacquainted with Morgan County High School classmate Arnold Ward at their 50th class reunion. They married in 1979 and resided in Solona Beach, Calif., until his death in 1996. Thereafter she made her home in Centre, Ala.
Affectionately called Ma’am Maw by her grandchildren, Fran was a member of First United Methodist Church in Athens. She was also a member of DAR and served as past president of the Athens Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She actively researched her family’s geneology and donated her research papers to the Cherokee County Library in Centre, Ala. Besides passing along her family history, Fran was an avid reader and enjoyed making intricate needlepoint pieces for her family.
She is survived by her two sons; her grandchildren, Cathy Coggin, Brent Coggin, Christy Coggin McCartney, Caryl Coggin Shaw, Clair Coggin Frankel, Asa-Benton Brindley Coggin, Gina Coggin, and Dana Coggin Gladden; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home at 1200 East Forrest St. in Athens with the funeral service at 6 p.m.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3 at Athens City Cemetery on Washington and Hobbs Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First United Methodist Church in Athens or the Cherokee County Carpenters for Christ: 1575 West Main St., Centre, AL 35960.
