Re: [COGGESHALL] John Coggeshall b.1470
by Pete & Sandy Coggeshall
Candee,
You appear to be asking about the John Coggeshall who appears on page 25
of my father's
1988 book "/Ancestors and Kin/." His brother-in-law was Robert Parker,
but the book records
no first name for his wife. John's mother was Alice ___, andthisfirst
name may have been
attached to the last name of Parker to come up with a name for your John
Coggeshall's wife.
This John was the 6th John Coggeshall in a line that probably started
with a son of a Ralph
de Coggeshall whowas born after about 1301. Because the same first name
was used for
these 6 John Coggeshalls (in a row), it is difficult at times to
separate information about father
from that about son or even grand father.
My father does notrecord a birth date for your John, but he appears in
therecords of Hundon,
Essex in 1487 and again in 1492. If your birth date is correct, he would
have only been about
17 years old in 1487. I suspect that he was likely born before 1470,
but know of no proof of
that suspicion. His will was proved on Jan 31, 1502 -- so a death in
late 1501 is very likely.
A birth in 1470 would have made him only about 31 years old at death -
another reason to
believe he was born before 1470. This John was living in Hundon as late
as 1492, but had
moved 12 miles south to Gosfield, Essex by 1501.
His father (also a John Coggeshall) was living in Hundon in 1454 and
also in 1477, so it is
likely that your John was born in Hundon, county Essexand it islikely he
was also married
in Hundon.
My father did not list Castle Hedingham as a birth place for any
Coggeshall. He simply
looked at a map of county Essex and saw that if you drew a circle 10
miles in radius with
Castle Hedingham as the center, that circle would almost cover all of
Essex where
Coggeshalls lived for 500 years. Such a map is shown in his book, with
all of the
Coggeshall locations shown with black dots. The book also has extensive
notes on the
sources my father used for the information presented in the book.
His book, "/Ancestors and Kin/" has much more information about this
line of John Coggeshalls.
This book is for sale at Amazon for $50. I am selling it from my own
stock of sealed books for
$40, postage paid in the USA. Feel free to order from them or from me.
However, if you order
the book from me, I insist that youread more information about it and
its contents to be certain
that you will be a happy customer should you order from me.
