I haven't posted my info in years and was wondering if anyone out there has
any information about Benjamin Coggeshall who was born in Portsmouth RI
probably around early 1700s.
He is supposed to have died in Stratford, CT. He married Elizabeth Dunlap on
April 8, 1735 in Stratford, CT and fathered Dunlap Coggeshall. I know NOTHING
about this man's life and was hoping that by now someone has found out about
him. His other children are Mary, John, Sarah, Archibald, and Daniel.

Hi Pete & Kathy,
Thank you both for your input.
I am now going to concentrate on finding out when Stephen married his second
wife and finding Lilians death record
Kind regards
Janet Johnston (UK)
Hi Pete and all,
Further to my earlier e-mail, I have just found details of Lilian Gudgeons
and Stephen W Coggeshalls marriage on the New England Historic Genealogical
Society's website.
Lilian stated her parents as William Gudgeon and Alice Williamson. These
people were in fact her maternal grandparents. They gave her a home in
Lancashire (UK) until the death of her grandfather when Lilian was approx
14/15 years of age.
Just thought it may be of interest.
Thanks
Janet Johnston (UK)
Hi Pete,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, the Lilian who married Stephen Weaver Coggeshall is my Lilian. I
omitted to say in my last message that she is not a direct ancestor. Her
mother and my great x 2 grandfather were brother & sister.
Her mother was Alice Gudgeon, but unfortunately, her father is not known. I
am unsure where the name of John came from. The only John in her family was
John William Gudgeon, my great x 2 grandfather (her uncle).
In the 1910 & 1920 Census', Stephen W Coggeshall is married to an Alice M,
who was 10 years younger. They had her mother living with them in 1920, Etta
M Foster. Do you know if this is the same Stephen? If so, I am presuming
Lillian had died by this point. Again though, I am unable to find any
records.
I have joined the New England Historic Genealogical Society via the
internet. I have had a quick look, but am hoping to get to grips with their
databases sometime soon. So maybe something will turn up there.
If you have any further information on this family, I would be interested to
hear it.
Kind regards
Janet Johnston (UK)

Hi all - can I add my two cents to this line?
I am always impressed that Pete Coggeshall is so helpful to folk about the
book, and respect his perspective.
But I wonder if there is another possibility here.
Lilian and Steve married right around the time the info in the book starts
to peter out.
Can it be that they had no issue when the info was supplied to the book BUT
a couple few years later, lo and behold, a bouncing baby!
Thus, "no issue" is correct when written, but not correct in the span of
Lilian's life?
Hi all,
I am new to your list, but have recently found out that an ancestor of mine
married into the Coggeshall family.
Lilian Gudgeon (b.1875 in England) married a Stephen M Coggeshall (b.1874)
sometime between 1893 & 1900 in the USA.
In the 1900 census, they were living in Newport Ward 2, Rhode Island.
In the 1910 census, I have found a Stephen W married to an Alice.
I can't' find Lilian at all in the 1910 census, nor can I find a death for
her.
Does anyone know of this family. Are Stephen W and Stepehn M two different
people, born around the same time?
Any help would be appreciated.

Janet,
The 1930 Book "The Coggeshalls in America" has very few family members
listed past about 1900.
Here is what is listed for Lillian Gudgeon and Stephen Weaver Coggeshall on
page 293.
"Stephen Weaver Coggeshall, b Middletown, RI, 12-21-1873; m 7-13-1897,
Lillian Gudgeon, daughter of John and Alice Gudgeon. She was born
Lancashire, England, Aug 5, 1875. No issue." The book shows that Stephen

Janet,
I have provided all of the information contained in the 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America."
Being in the UK, you can more easily get to historic Coggeshall sites located there, including (but not limited to):
- The town of Coggeshall, Essex (NE of London and due west of Colchester)
- Coggeshall Hall (due south of Coggeshall in a location known as Kelvedon, Essex). Controlled by the Senior Coggeshall line until the death of Sir William de Coggeshall circa 1425, when it passed to John Doreward, Speaker of the House of Commons, through his wife Blanch Coggeshall, oldest daughter of Sir William.
- Codham Hall, Westhersfield, Essex. This larger home was acquired by Sir Ralph de Coggeshall between 1255 and 1295, and was the principal seat of the senior Coggeshall line until the death of Sir William (above), when it passed to his third daughter Margaret Coggeshall and her husband.
I visited all of these and more in 1976 (but only the outside of Codham Hall), and have not been back since. There is more information on our Coggeshall line in England in my father's book "Ancestors and Kin" which I am selling. If you want more information on this book, send me an e-mail, and I can provide more. I do not sell this book unless you receive this information first:

Hi all,
I am new to your list, but have recently found out that an ancestor of mine married into the Coggeshall family.
Lilian Gudgeon (b.1875 in England) married a Stephen M Coggeshall (b.1874) sometime between 1893 & 1900 in the USA.
In the 1900 census, they were living in Newport Ward 2, Rhode Island.
In the 1910 census, I have found a Stephen W married to an Alice.
I can't' find Lilian at all in the 1910 census, nor can I find a death for her.
Does anyone know of this family. Are Stephen W and Stepehn M two different people, born around the same time?
Any help would be appreciated.

Janet Johnston (UK)
Janet,
The 1930 Book "The Coggeshalls in America" has very few family members listed past about 1900.
Here is what is listed for Lillian Gudgeon and Stephen Weaver Coggeshall on page 293.
"Stephen Weaver Coggeshall, b Middletown, RI, 12-21-1873; m 7-13-1897, Lillian Gudgeon, daughter of John and Alice Gudgeon. She was born Lancashire, England, Aug 5, 1875. No issue." The book shows that Stephen was the first son and child of George Coggeshall of Middletown, RI and his first wife, Alzada Frances Weaver. (When George's first wife died, he married Alzada's younger sister.)
With no issue, this is not likely to be one of your ancestors.
Here are the Stephen Coggeshalls listed in this book:
- Stephen Henry Coggeshall, b Bristol, RI, 1-3-1900 {no further information, likely due little info in 20th cent).
- Stephen Coggeshall, b Guilford Co, NC, 7-9-1800, d Guilford Co, NC, about 1812.
- Stephen Coggeshall, b Tiverton, Mass; m Tiverton, Mass, 11-6-1848, Patience Rounds. {no more info.}
The last Stephen in this list is not a known descendent of President John Coggeshall of RI, but one of the Descendants of John Coggeshall of Newport and Amy Dwelley -- which line has not been tied to the older and longer line from President John.
My experience with the information in this book is that up to just before 1900, the information is very good, accurate and as complete as was know back in 1930. After about 1890 or so, the information is much more spotty and not as accurate and complete.
Sorry I could not provide more information on the names you have found. If you could provide more names or information, I will be happy to check further.
