Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi all -
Our list was successfully moved to RootsWeb's new mailing list system
late last night. I would be interested in hearing about any problems
which result from the move. Email me at COGGESHALL-admin(a)rootsweb.com.
The address for sending messages to the list has changed. The list
name no longer contains the -L. COGGESHALL(a)rootsweb.com is now the
preferred list address. If you mistakenly use the old address it
should work, but try to get used to sending To: COGGESHALL(a)rootsweb.com.
Some ISPs are having problems recognizing that the messages on the
newly moved lists are not spam. Check your spam filters. You may
need to put the new list address (without the -L) in your address
book to prevent it from being filed in your Junk or Spam folder.
AOL subscribers - be aware that there might a temporary delay in
receiving list mail (on AOL's end) and also to be careful to check
your spam folders. If you find any list mail in there be sure to
click the THIS IS NOT SPAM button and read the mail in their inbox so
that the filters will be trained with regard to the new server.
The email address for unsubscribing will be found in a footer on each
list message. It is COGGESHALL-request(a)rootsweb.com and will be used
for subscribers to either list or digest mode. It is also the
subscribe address for what used to be the -L list. When you subscribe
or unsubscribe you must write the appropriate word (subscribe or
unsubscribe) in the Subject: line. Putting it in the message will no
longer work.
Don't send Bcc: messages to lists. There is rarely a need to send
the same message to more than one list and Bcc's will not work.
If you filter your email into different mailboxes you may need to
tweak your filters, as headers you filter on may have
changed. [COGGESHALL] will continue to be in the subject line for
this list, and the X-Loop: header will continue to give the list
name. If your filters say COGGESHALL-L, you will need to remove the -L.
The list information on
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/coggeshall.html will change
sometime after all the lists get moved. That link still shows this
list with the -L in the name and gives incorrect
subscribe/unsubscribe addresses. The links on that page to the
archived posts should work, however. The list archives won't go away.
DIGEST subscribers:
Subscribing to the digest remains as it
was: mailto:COGGESHALL-D-request@rootsweb.com. However, you may no
longer subscribe to both the digest and the list modes with the same
email address. To get messages both ways you'll have to have the
digest sent to another address. I have contacted anyone who has lost
their digest subscription because of the move.
If you get the digest (COGGESHALL-D) it may look a little
different. I may be able to help you get it back to close to the way
it looked before. Email me for help.
If you have any questions; if things seem to have changed in the way
you get your email; if you are as confused; contact me at
COGGESHALL-admin(a)rootsweb.com. I'll see what I can do to help.
Margaret Olson
list manager
Hi -
I'm Margaret Olson. I manage the COGGESHALL surname mailing list at
RootsWeb. Email me at COGGESHALL-admin(a)rootsweb.com.
Every person subscribed to this mailing list or any other RootsWeb
mailing list should have received an email a few days ago alerting us
that RootsWeb is changing from an older mailing list software package
(Smartlist) to new software (Mailman). They are also changing
servers as they do this. That message listed the following URL so
that we could follow the schedule:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html.
This is a huge operation for RootsWeb, which has more than 29,000
lists to move. The amount of email this is generating is affecting
many ISPs, including AOL, which is blocking some RootsWeb email right
now before the move even starts. Spam blockers don't always "get it
right", they have discovered and sheer volume raises flags at
ISPs. Also, the list managers are as new to this as you are, and
will be learning along with all of us about the new features of
Mailman. Give us time to get organized, too.
Our list, COGGESHALL-L, (and the digest version COGGESHALL-D), will
be moved with the first group. At present that is scheduled for
tomorrow, Thursday, August 17, (US Mountain Daylight Savings
Time). I do not know whether that will be delayed because of the AOL
and other blocks. It might be.
What does this move mean to you, the subscriber?
First, the schedule may change. It may not happen tomorrow. Check
for updates at the website given above for this and other lists you are on.
Second, when it does happen I hope you will hardly notice
it. Realistically, though, there will be a few changes. I will try
to post those for you after the move takes place. If you have any
questions; if things seem to have changed in the way you get your
email; if you are as confused as a lot of others are; do contact me
at COGGESHALL-admin(a)rootsweb.com. I'll see what I can do to help.
Current subscribers will probably not get a new welcome message. If
you do get one, don't panic. You won't be on an additional
list. You'll just be on the new version of the same list.
For any questions or problems, check the RootsWeb helpdesk page at
http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ to see if there is a message in the
yellow information box about the migration. You can email me, too,
at COGGESHALL-admin(a)rootsweb.com.
I hope this massive move doesn't bring down the internet! (that's
supposed to be a joke!)
You'll be hearing from me again soon.
Margaret
