I have been looking for the connection of John S. Coggeshall who ended up in
Iowa about 1875 with his wife and two daughters. I have written before but
no one has been able to connect him to any one. He was born abt 1842 to
1844.
I found a John S. in the 1860 US census aged 17 and working as a bank clerk.
His father is David M. and the sheriff of Newport, RI. David is married to
a Catherine and there are also two brothers, David & William. I hope
someone can tell me if this is my John S. that I have been looking for.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Pete, thank you for the background on the Coggeshall Historical Association. On
the CD the eighth generation ends at entry no. 1992: Sylvanus Brown Coggeshall
on page 318. There are no 9th or 10th generations listed. Page 319 is headed the
Descendants of John Coggeshall of Newport and Amy Dwelly, at the end of which on
page 331 is the start of the list of unclassified members. The disc itself is
labelled 1930 - Hope this answers your question.
Does your later 1988 book say anything about the parents of William Holden
Coggeshall?
Pete, have you taken up the mantle from your father and carried on the research
activity into the Coggeshall family history?
Some one-name family history groups now use DNA testing to establish/trace
family lines - was this ever considered or undertaken by your father/yourself?
i.e Is there a DNA profile for the descendants of president John Coggeshall?

For those who are interested,
The Coggeshall Historical Association was founded by Bob Coggeshall (who had a Coggeshall web site up for many years). Bob was effectively the President of the Association (but I don't remember a vote ever being taken). My father wrote many articles for the Association Newsletter, many of which were on Bob's web site, without any attribution to my father. So the implication was that Bob wrote them rather than the actual author, Robert Walden Coggeshall. I tried to communicate with Bob a number of times, to no effect, to get him to correct this omission.
I later heard that Bob was sick, and recently that he was dead. I don't know if this is true, it was only rumor. I do know that Bob never answered my many e-mails to him or messages I left on his web site. His web site is also no longer working, which lends credence to his passing.
The last activity that I remember by The Coggeshall Historical Association was the trip to England -- I believe sometimes in the later 1980s. I remember it was shortly after that trip that the newsletters stopped coming, and the association just seemed to disappear. It was certainly gone by about 1988 when A&K was published.
I would be curious if the CD version of TCIA is a copy of the 1930 book or a copy of the 1982 reprinting -- which has a number of corrections made by my father. The biggest error in the original was that the headings at the top of each page continued the "Eighth Generation" notation into people who were actually in the "Ninth Generation" and even a few in the "Tenth Generation." The correction in 1982 has the Ninth Generation starting with #1327 (Fredrick Rogers Coggeshall) on page 282 and the Tenth Generation starting with # 1856 (Walter Henry Coggeshall) on page 313. In the original book all of these pages are labeled as Eighth Generation.
Not an error, but something I left out of my earlier note: After the Tenth Generation, there is also a section labeled "Descendants of John Coggeshall of Newport and Amy Dwelley" that runs from page 319 through page 330. The page headings for this section are "Descendants of John Coggeshall" rather than a Generation numbering. This John Coggeshall can not be tied to President John, but there remains the possibly that he may well have been a descendant.
The reprinted version of TCIA also has some additions as follows:
- A more accurate version of The Coggeshall Arms, drawn by my father for this reprinting and shown opposite a copy of the original cover page. These arms are also embossed into the new book's cover. The coat of arms in the original is puny and smaller.
- Opposite page 4 there are two pictures of Coggeshall Hall -- the original book's circa 1920 picture and a picture that I took in April of 1976.
- Opposite page 5 there are two new pictures of the front and back of Great Codham Hall that I also took in 1976 along with an explanation note by my father about the significance of Great Codham Hall.
- Opposite page 15 are two new pictures of the Billings Coggeshall House in Newport (I took the one dated 1982). The original only had 3 pictures of Homesteads of 3 sons of Joshua Coggeshall opposite page 14.
- Opposite page 145 is a new reduced copy of the Title Page of "Coggeshall's Voyages" by Capt George Coggeshall. On the other side is a picture of Capt George from the original printing.
- Opposite page 241 is the content of a letter that Charles Pierce Coggeshall sent to my father in 7-1932 discussing Charles' work on TCIA. Opposite page 240 is a picture of Charles from the original printing.
- Opposite page 317 is the content of a form letter that Thellwell Russell Coggeshall used in the early 1900s to collect information for writing TCIA. Opposite page 316 is a picture of Thellwell from the original printing.
My father provided all of this additional information for the reprinting as well as a "clean copy" of the original book. So while this was reported to be an effort of The Coggeshall Historical Association, it was actually all done by my father working with The Reprint Company. There are other more minor corrections that he made throughout the book that are too numerous to list here. While I have two copies of the original TCIA that I plan to pass on to my grandchildren, I find that I use the single copy I have of the reprinted version the most, because I know it is more accurate and complete than the original. I only wish my father had bought more than one copy of the reprinted version.

Pete, you mention in your email to ethylene, 'The Coggeshall Historical
Association' does this association still exist and if it does - is it still active?
Ethylene - I have a CD copy of the 1930 TCIA from Quentin publications

Aloha Pete!
I read that you do sell copies of this book. Are you set up for PayPal to receive payments? I'm VERY interested in obtaining a copy, if it's alright with you.
Thanks, again, Pete!

In TCIA, the section on "Unclassified Members of the Coggeshall Family" runs from page 331 through page 354 (the last page is only 50% covered). Unlike the first section of this book (pages 1 through 330) on "descendants of John Coggeshall," this second section does not have a separate number for each Coggeshall in the book. Too much trouble to count (about 66 Coggeshalls plus their children), but there are about 3 listed on each page (not counting their children -- which included George Washington C.) A number of these spell their name Cogshall.

Aloha Pete!
Thank you so much for your response and look-up! Yes, I believe you're right! William Holden Coggeshall would be more sensible. Can't remember how I came up with "Hunt!" Sorry about that.
I have a photocopy of "Hawaii" George's divorce case and he is listed as "George William Coggeshall," and it appears that he went by "William" instead of George. Maybe he changed his name after arriving here?? Anything's possible.
It's interesting that William Holden cannot be tied to President John! Hmmm.
I thank you so much for your time and information. Have a fantastic weekend!

This sounds like it could be your Hawaiian Coggeshall. Of passing interest: This George and his father are both in the section of TCIA that's labeled "Unclassified Members." This means that while there existence is acknowledged, they can not be tied back to President John Coggeshall -- like those in the front of the book who can be tied to John.
- There is no listing in TCIA for a George William Coggeshall.

Aloha Listers and you too, Cousin Dennis!!
Peter? Do you, by any chance, have a William Hunt Coggeshall listed in your book? The William Hunt I'm interested in would have been b. in RI but possibly married in CT and all his children were b. in CT. One son, in particular, George W. Coggeshall, a 22-yr old mariner on the 1850 Census of New London, CT., is the one I believe came to Hawaii, married a Hawaiian woman and had a child named William, who's name seems to have changed to COGSHALL in what documents I have found on him here in Hawaii. His children also carried the same spelling.
A George W. Coggeshall (possibly the 22-yr old mariner) was naturalized in the Kingdom of Hawaii on 05 Sep 1855. At the time of his naturalization, he was residing in Hanalei, on the island of Kauai.
Anybody missing a George William COGGESHALL to the "Sandwich Isles?" If you are, you have some family with Hawaiian blood!
Any information will be GREATLY appreciated and mahalo (thank you), in advance, for all responses!

This sounds like it could be your Hawaiian Coggeshall. Of passing interest: This George and his father are both in the section of TCIA that's labeled "Unclassified Members." Aloha Listers and you too, Cousin Dennis!!

Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail.
Hello list,
I am trying to find information on the William H Coggeshall and his son Geo W.
Coggeshall, that appear on the 1850 census of New London, Connecticut. William H
Coggeshall was according to the census born in Rhode Island in about 1794 - is
he related to the Coggeshall's of America - does anybody have information on him
or his son and their antecedents/descendants. I have searched the 1930
Coggeshall genealogy cd without much luck.
thanks
Dennis Wright
