Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thank you Pete for Looking for John and Henry and unfortunately I do not have any more info on them as it seems like they were trying to hide their past. I will keep looking and maybe I can stumble on to some info some time. Max
Hi Colleen
I found Robert (Bob) Alan Coggeshall to be most helpful in my Coggeshall genealogy research.
He help me to obtain the 1982 book "Coggeshalls in America"
I also have the book by Robert Walden Coggeshall.
Genealogy information from Robert (Bob) Alan Coggeshall sites are:
http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/kiowa1/default and
http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/kiowa1/default/nindex.htm#Coggeshall
Hope that this will help!

Pete, I have a John S.B. Coggeshall born 1844 in Palmyra, Wayne co., NY, died 1904 in Iowa, married Mary Annie Mc Clowrey (Mc Clowvey), in Memphis, TN. They had three children, all girls. First one born in Memphis, TN, second born in Mississippi, and the third born in Iowa. I found another Coggeshall, Henry in the 1900 Fed. census of Iowa in the same county as John so think they might have been brothers but have no proof.
So far I have not been able to connect John to any Coggeshall's in NY. I sure would like to know who his family was. I don't know if your Coggeshall book can help me but if it can I would sure like to know. Any information you might have on my Coggeshall would be a God send.
Thank you, Max
Colleen,
Welcome to the Coggeshall site. I've been gone and just returned to find you are the new administrator. Welcome. Do you have any genealogical link to the Coggeshall line? As you can tell from my name, I do.
To answer a few of Colleen's questions:
- I'm not aware that this list has a "home site."
- There is a well-known Coggeshall site that is a part of "The Bob Coggeshall Home Page" entitled:
"The Coggeshall Genealogy"
http://www.users.nyc.pipeline.com/~kiowa/gene.htm
Bob was the president of "The Coggeshall Historical Association" which was very active getting the Coggeshall family together through its Newsletter, two reunions in Rhode Island and one reunion in England. Most of this occurred in the late 1970s through the 1980s. My late father, Robert Walden Coggeshall, was also very active in the Association, writing a number of articles for their Newsletter. The Coggeshall Coat of Arms on this site was drawn by my father, and he developed all of the information about this Coat of Arms.
My father was also responsible for the Association's reprinting of the 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" (TCIA) in 1982. This book is "the bible" for tracing Coggeshall ancestry in the USA back to President John Coggeshall (first President of Rhode Island) who came to New England in 1632. This book, published in 1930, has very few Coggeshalls listed who were born after about 1900. But if you can connect to any of the 1,992 Coggeshalls listed in this book's main section, you can trace your ancestry back to President John. Because of corrections my father made to the original manuscript, the reprinted version of TCIA is more accurate and informative than the original printing. The first reprinting of TCIA is now also out of print, even though there is a note on this site stating (incorrectly) that there are a limited number of copies still available. I have talked with the publisher who did the 1982 reprinting and he is considering doing another limited printing. Co!
ntact me if you need further information on a second reprinting of TCIA. pcoggeshall(a)earthlink.net
Many of the articles my father Robert Walden Coggeshall wrote for the Association Newsletter are now posted on this site (without proper attribution). In fact, on the Bob Coggeshall Home Page is this statement: "But in the meantime, you can read some articles I have written on the Coggeshall family history." This is a "bald faced lie" because I know for a fact that my father wrote the following articles posted there:
- The Coggeshall Slide Rule
- The Coggeshall Name
- The Coggeshall Saddle
- Coggeshall Lace
There are other articles from past newsletters posted on this site. I do not know who wrote them, but I'm fairly certain that the author of most of these articles was NOT Bob Coggeshall. These other articles include:
- John de Coggeshall: A 14th Century English Knight
- The Coggeshalls in England
(the information in this article is not as complete as the information in my father's book "Ancestors and Kin."
- The Coggeshall Farm Museum
- Colonel William Turner Coggeshall
- The Joshua Coggeshall Cemetery
- The Coggeshall Launch and Tow Boat Company
If you click on the link to The 1982 Reunion "Proceedings," you will find, among other items, the following:
- Robert W. Coggeshall Paper -- (a speech that my father gave on the last night of this reunion).
- Peter Collin Coggeshall V Paper -- (a condensation from a slide show that I gave on the first night of this reunion, without any of the pictures or any reference in the "paper" to the pictures being described).
At least for these two items, Bob Coggeshall provides proper attribution. I have attempted to contact Bob to get the oversight on my father's authorship of his articles corrected, but have not been successful. I have been told that Bob has been quite sick (I think Cancer) for some time. The most recent indication of a change in this site by Bob is dated April 5, 1999.
But enough of my complaints about Bob Coggeshall's site. Again, welcome as the list administrator to this site.
I have personal copies of "The Coggeshalls in America," and will be happy to help anyone who wants information from this book. I also have copies of my father's book, "Ancestors and Kin" (A&K) for sale. If you want further information about the coverage of the Coggeshall line in A&K, contact me directly.

WOW! What a great thing to do!
I'd love to have the Coggeshall GEDCOM.
Mary Cornell Coggeshall was my 4th G Grandmother,b14 July 1761; m Peleg
Brown, bApril 28 1757. She was daughter of Joshua, b11 May 1722.
My email is NKSgramma(a)aol.com
Thank you and a very happy Holiday season to all.

My "gift" is actually the date of a Coggeshall brick wall. Mary
Coggeshall, daughter of Daniel, married Stephen Brownell Jr. She was
born in 1786, married Stephen as his second wife in Little Compton, RI,
on Dec. 11, 1803, and died in Little Compton, RI, Jan. 3, 1863.
I have a copy of the marriage certificate which was provided as part of
Stephen's pension application. That's how we know that Mary is a
daughter of Daniel Coggeshall. Otherwise, absolutely nothing is known
about Daniel. Because the first child of Mary and Stephen is named
Dwelley, it is strongly suspected that Daniel is somehow connected to
the John Coggeshall who married Amey Dwelley (they did have a son named
Daniel). However, once again, this John is the son of John Coggeshall
and Jane Birrell and there is no further information after that.
So any way you look at it, you hit the proverbial brick wall. Mary
Coggeshall and Stephen Brownell Jr are my 4xG grandparents.

I would love to have the Coggeshalle GEDCOM also and my e-mail address is

Here is my "gift" for the list.
A few years ago I bought a "Rhode Island Historical Magazine, Oct. 1884.
(Formerly The Newport Historical Magazine.) This magazine has an account of
the genealogy of the
COGGESHALL family from our emigrant, John COGGESHALL. It also has a speech
given by one of the leading COGGESHALL's of the time, I'm in the middle of
transcribing it.
I have put the genealogy from this magazine into a gedcom file using PAF. I
will gladly send it to any who request it from me. I know that Roots Web has
a problem with attachments, so please contact me so I can send it privately.
Happy Holidays.

Hi everyone,
Now that we have all the administrative stuff out of the way, here's
your first challenge...
December is the month many of us celebrate a special child's birth and
gift-giving is at its highest level. Since giving is the predominant,
worldwide monthly theme, we're going to pick up on that. This month's
challenge is two-fold:
1.) Send in your births and christenings from people born in the
county; and/or...
2.) Send a gift to the list. Gifts might be be:
* census extractions for a family or two, or perhaps the entire county!
* a list of names on a year's tax records
* a biography
* 3-4 generations of a family
* a will
* a deed
* county obituaries for a given period
* immigration/emigration records
* a family's bible record
Your gift doesn't have to be limited to what I've given above; those
were just some ideas. The point of this is to give a gift to
the list and have some fun doing it.
Select one or both challenges to work on ~ it's your choice. All
responses to a challenge should be sent to the list
(COGGESHALL-L(a)rootsweb.com>.
I hope you'll all have a safe and happy holiday season.
Colleen
Hi again everyone, :)
This will be a rather long read and for that I apologize in advance.
However, I ask that you read all this. There is very important data
inside that you need to be made aware of. I won't do this to you again,
I promise! :) You might want to print this message out and keep it by
your computer.
Topics include:
1. Who I am
2. How I operate a list
3. List guidelines
4. The usual administrator nit-picky stuff
* Virus messages
* Chain letters
* Me too! messages
5. Chat forum
6. Subscribe/unsubscribe procedures
7. To post messages to the list
8. If you go on vacation
9. Contacting me
WHO I AM
I'd like to introduce myself properly to you: My name is Colleen
Pustola [2-l's and 2-e's in Colleen, please]. I'm an Army wife and the
mother of five terrific kids with two still at home. My pseudonym, Lady
Audris, comes from one of my
former obsessions :) as a living historian/teacher of the medieval
period. I've been researching my lines for 26 years, teaching this
science for 18, and guest-speaking at genealogical seminars and in
schools for 13. Though I'm not Mormon, I did receive the bulk of my
formal training from them so reciprocate by volunteering in their Family
History Centers whenever we live near one. I've published my first
book, the "Bower/Winchcomb Connection" and am currently working on six
others including an update of the first. I am also the discussion
coordinator for 79 other Rootsweb lists, 30 Rootsweb message boards, and
have been a coordinator since August 1998. I have two domains on the
Web with four sites. Yes, I stay *very* busy. It is EXTREMELY
important that you IDENTIFY THE LIST YOU'RE ON, if you contact me.
You now know my whole life in a nutshell! :)
HOW I OPERATE A LIST
Frankly, I don't like dictatorial listowners! They make me nervous and
afraid to post! So, I guess you could say I'm rather laid-back. The
only time I get "freaky" is if you break one of the first two guidelines.
Basically, I run the list with respect and consideration for everyone. I
hope you'll participate in the same way.
LIST GUIDELIINES
I do NOT mandate a "format-this-way" or "post-only-these-items" policy.
Keep in mind we all have three goals to achieve:
1. Enjoy ourselves!
2. Find our ancestral lines and inline cousins.
3. Get as much data online as possible to accomplish the first two!
We do, however, have some guidelines that we follow in order to maintain
a happy medium for everyone:
1. NEVER flame [verbally attack] anyone on the list. The penalty for
this is IMMEDIATE removal. If you have a problem with one of the list
members, do not post what you think about them. That's what I'm here
for. There is never a justification to say hateful words and hurt
someone. Hurt feelings get nobody anywhere and can make the entire
group feel uneasy and unhappy. If you're unhappy with someone, direct
it to me where we can discuss it.
2. Newbies to genealogy are VERY special. Treat them with much
kindness as they struggle to learn the where's and how's of not only how
to research, but how to participate in a discussion list without feeling
afraid, intimidated, or demeaned.
3. Criticism is always gentle and constructive. We all make mistakes
[I make them all the time!], and we need to remember that maybe not
everyone is having as great a day as you are. If someone makes a
mistake on something, go to their rescue and show him/her how to do it,
if you know how.
4. Always show compassion towards someone who is having trouble with
something. But first, always ask if he/she would like for you to help
them learn. Please remember not to write anyone and deliberately point
out how many mistakes they have made. This would be outright rude, and
we're all above that. That person might be having a rough day with
mistakes spilling out every time they try to do something.
5. When you post messages to the list, please try to use a helpful
subject line like "John COGGESHALL d. 1800 OH," rather than a generic
one like "inquiry about my family line."
6. Your messages through RootsWeb's servers MUST ALWAYS be in text
format. If you try to use HTML or MIME formats or try to send an
attachment with your message the RootsWeb server will simply kick your
message out and bounce it to me as an error. This is their policy, not
mine.
7. Virus epidemics are spreading through the lists more and more often.
It is unsettling to most list members to receive list messages from
other members whose computers are known to be infected. It is my
responsibility to protect the list as a unit. Therefore, any list
member whose computer is known to be infected WILL BE MANUALLY
UNSUBSCRIBED from the list until I know for sure your machine is clean.
You can do this by sending me an email privately. If I don't receive an
attachment or any other wierd thing resulting from a message from you,
then I'll know your machine is 'recovered' and I'll manually resubscribe
you.
THE USUAL ADMINISTRATOR NIT-PICKY STUFF
**VIRUS MESSAGES: We've had some pretty wicked viruses plague us the
last 1-1/2 years. I was [thankfully] forewarned of two of them from a
genealogy list I was on. Like everyone else however, I've also seen so
many old virus warnings that I also get disgruntled when they're put out
again and again.
If you are alerted to a virus warning - BEFORE you send a message to
this list please check it out first to make sure it isn't a hoax. You
can do so by going to <http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html>
and doing a search for the particular virus you are concerned about.
Once you've ascertained you're not dealing with a hoax please use the
CHAT: format to tell everyone.
**CHAIN LETTERS -- These are a bane to the existence of e-mail lists and
the members on them. Please do not post chain-letters to the list. They
serve no purpose other than to clog the system and make a lot of people
cranky.
**"ME TOO!" MESSAGES -- I have yet to fully comprehend the purpose of
this type of message other than to glut a list with yet more bandwidth.
Unless we are taking a list vote - which if necessary, I will
generate - please try not to post these to the list. Also, please
realize that we are all quick to hit the 'reply' button [I do it too],
and sometimes these slips will happen particularly with new list members
or especially, our newbies.
**ROLL CALLS -- If we need one because of a too-quiet list, I'll
announce it. Why me?... Because I have guidelines for our newbies that
help them be able to participate, as well. I also try to help our
lurkers be willing to join in. It does nobody any good to have a roll
call if half the people can't/won't contribute.
That's it. No harrassing "form your messages this and such way." No
"you will...." Post anything you desire provided it's about our
surname, genealogy and ancestral material. Off-topic items (including
virus notices) and discussion are covered in the next section.

CHAT: FORUM
There are times when you have something to say that's not on-topic for
the list, but you think the list should know it. You have two choices
here: you can either send it to me to be related to everyone or you can
use the CHAT: format. There are two rules to using CHAT:
1. You _must_ start your subject line with CHAT:
2. Absolutely NO genealogy is to be put in CHAT: messages
because not everyone wants to read CHAT: forum messages. Those people
know to simply delete messages with CHAT: in the subject line.
CHAT: format messages are not an everyday occurrence. They happen here
and there. The only, and longest, time the CHAT: forum is actively open
is the period starting Thanksgiving day through to January 2nd so
everyone can post holiday messages, recipes, traditions, etc. After
that, the CHAT: forum closes and resumes its normal inactivity.

I hope I've covered everything! :) If you've made it this far without
falling asleep, then I thank you for reading it all. My attempts to get
you filled-in have not gone to waste.
CONTACTING ME
I'd also like you all to know that I do my best to answer email
promptly. However, my best intentions are usually thrown askew. I'm
discussion coordinator for 79 other email lists, webmistress for two
domains and 5 websites, 30 Rootsweb message boards, and I'm currently
working on my second book. Please, be sure to IDENTIFY THE LIST YOU'RE
ON WHEN YOU EMAIL ME because with so many people, I have trouble keeping
track of who is in which research group.
I also have an adoring husband and 5 kids (2 teenagers still at home)
meaning, a home life. Hence, I have a very full plate here. Please be
patient if you email me and I'll do my best to respond within a
reasonable amount of time. (at the present, "current" = about a week;
sometimes sooner)
I wish you all good luck in your research!
Colleen Pustola
Discussion Coordinator
Hi again everyone,
First, I'd like to thank those of you who have extended such a warm
welcome to me. I look forward to helping all of you find your lines.
Taglines: You'll be able to tell from the bottom of this message that
taglines are now in place. They're little helpers that will appear on
every post from today on. Want to know how to how to post a message?
Need to contact me?... read the taglines! :)
Monthly Challenges: At the beginning of just about every month I'll
challenge you individually or as a group. Subject challenges are random
and from one month to the next will be different. I'll issue your first
one in about an hour. All my other lists enjoy them; I hope you do, too.
Sunday Morning Coffee: Almost every Sunday all of my surname lists
receive the Sunday Morning Coffee, a newsletter of sorts that I put out.
It's my way of having coffee with everyone on my lists. Since we are
in the middle of a story right now, yours will start in two weeks.
Next to follow are my guidelines, then the challenge. The guidelines
are long, but I'll have everything laid out in them for you. If you
have any questions, you're invited to contact me at
<ladyaudris(a)earthlink.net> .
Colleen
Hi everyone,
This is just a brief message to let you know that effective today,
December 15th, I am the new list administrator. I'll let you all know
my guidelines in the next day or two.
For a list with 32 people on it, I noticed in the archives that you're
extremely quiet. I hope to change that for you. :)
I don't know how long you've been without an administrator, nor do I
know what his/her policies were. From what the settings were when I
took over today, I've made some in-house administrative changes:
1. Instead of the [COGG] you're accustomed to seeing at the beginning
of each subject line, you'll now see the prepend [COGGESHALL]. You
don't need to type in anything but your subject header. Rootsweb will
insert [COGGESHALL] when your message passes through their server.
1. All messages will now reply back to the list. If you wish a message
to be private, please be sure you change the "To:" line in the email
message form.
2. Digests are now set to be sent every 12 hours. This will help you
receive messages much faster.
3. Message limits are set to 20,000 bytes max. This helps prevent
older computers from locking up and digest messages from being
truncated. Digests will also be sent at this smaller size.
Taglines will be at the bottom of each message starting today. I'll
send another message to all of you when they go into effect. These will
be simple list helps ~ nothing more.
I would like to know if this list has a home site. If not, do any of
you have COGGESHALL surname sites? Please let us know about them.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, you're welcome to contact me
at <ladyaudris(a)earthlink.net>.
