Could someone tell me what line of the Coggeshall family went West to
IL, Iowa and NE? I cannot seem to find a connection to any line and
I have a John J.B., William B., Henry, and a G. P. Coggeshall. As
they are all in the area about the same time, late 1800's they may be
brothers. Sure do need help on this family. Maxine

List Manager Margaret Olson asked the question: How do you pronounce this name (Coggeshall)?
There is no single accepted pronunciation for Coggeshall. My father, Robert Walden Coggeshall, in his book "Ancestors and Kin" writes: "Coggeshall in England, traditionally KOX-'l, now often KOG-e-sh'l; in America, the majority of families (60%) pronounce their surname KOG-sh'l," based on a survey done through The Coggeshall Historical Association Bulletin in 1982. "Other American surname pronunciations: KOGS-hawl (12%), KOGS-awl (10%), KOG-e-shawl (10%), KOG-e-shal (7%)." {Note: the apostrophe (') in the above phonetic pronunciations indicates the presence of an unaccented vowel. My family is in the majority and uses the KOG-sh'l pronunciation.}
The book "Ancestors and Kin" (A&K) has a great deal of information on President John Coggeshall and his first son, Major John Coggeshall; information not contained in the book "The Coggeshalls in America." A&K also traces their line back to Sir Thomas de Coggeshall, living in England in 1149. If you are interested in this book and want more information on its coverage of the Coggeshall line, send me an e-mail message and I will provide additional details, including how to order the book. In your message indicate in interest in the Coggeshall line.

The only George Coggeshall listed in the book "The Coggeshalls in America" born in RI in 1720 was born in Portsmouth, RI (not Newport, RI) on 11-3-1720, and married Hannah Bourne or Bowen (not Margaret Bell) in Bristol, RI (not Wayne County, NC) 11-20-1748 (not 1740). George died in Bristol, RI (not Wayne County, NC) on 2-16-1766.
It's not clear this is the George Coggeshall in question, but he is the only George Coggeshall born near the year 1720 in RI. The book lists the following: two sons and two daughters from this marriage, the parents of Hannah, and the line from George back to President John Coggeshall.

I intend to reply to a number of the "Coggeshall-L Archives."
The book "The Coggeshalls in America" (published in 1930) has almost 2 pages on John Coggeshall, his wife Mary Stanton, and their 11 children. A Benjamin Coggeshall was their last child. However, other than the fact that he was born in Portsmouth, RI, after his previous brother Caleb who was born circa 1709, there is no other information on this Benjamin. The book also says that: "the will of Mary Stanton Coggeshall .... was proved 6-1-1747.... But she makes no mention of Caleb and Benjamin."
The original printing of "The Coggeshalls in America" was only 200 copies. It was reprinted in 1982 by The Coggeshall Historical Association, but all of these copies were sold a few years ago. The reprinted version has some corrections that were made by my father, Robert Walden Coggeshall. It also contains (page 240B) the text of a letter from Charles Pierce Coggeshall (one of the two compilers of this book) to Robert Walden Coggeshall dated 7-13-1932, that explains how the book came about.
I understand from Tom Smith of The Reprint Company, Publishers, that he is seriously considering doing a second reprinting of this book. He's collecting names of people who would be interested in purchasing a copy, and can be reached at 864-579-4433. He indicated to me that he expected the cost to be between $40 and $50 per copy.
