Does anyone know of a John Coggeshall in the Council Bluff area around 1891?
Does anyone have any Coggeshall's in that area at that time? Any help would
really be appreciated. Max

I have not yet moved my eme file from PAF 2.31 to Legacy (and cleaned up
and made events and sources out of my notes) so the notes look like my
personal shorthand sometimes, but I did include the notes when I uploaded
the file.
If you can find it, get that article from the Oct 1995 NEHGR
149:361-373. I have it and will make you a copy, but not till after
Christmas - too much going on here right now.
>I to descend from John & Elizabeth, as one of their eighth Great

>& Rachel.
Well I hate to break this to you - William may very well have not been John
Coggeshall's child! See that NEHGR article. The divorce was more or less
with the agreement of both parties and Elizabeth married again shortly
after to the man who may have been William's father ..... maybe. The
Balstones and the Coggeshalls were both influential families. Legally,
John had all 3 of them (John, Elizabeth, and William) declared to be
illegitimate.
>Would you know if there's a book with the Coggeshall lineage?
Yes - there is a "Coggeshalls in America" genealogy which followed several
lines down, including one to the Wilbur Coggeshall who was head of the
astronomy department at Indiana University when my father joined the
faculty there in 1938. It was quite a coincidence to learn many years
later that my mother was distantly related to Prof. Coggeshall. The
astronomer pronounced it "Cogs' hall" I heard others researching the name
in RI call it "Cog' esh all".
I also found information about Coggeshalls in an Anthony genealogy. The
Great Migration begins is undoubtedly the best authority on the
immigrant. The New England Historic Genealogical Society's Register - and
the book printed from articles in it (English Origins) are interesting.

I don't know about these names as attached to Coggeshalls, but from
experience I will guess:
>Bedediah ??? guess - like Jedediah, male
>Contents Usually Content - female
>Discovery ???
>Elisaha Elisha is male
>Freegift male
>Patience female
>Pity ??? there must have been a tragedy in the life of the mother
>Sylvanus 1897 male
I have listed in my file more than one Content Coggeshall. One, b 1676, is
daughter of the Maj. John Coggeshall and his 2nd wife.
Freegift Coggeshall, b 1657 was male and married to Elizabeth Matthews. He
had 2 sisters named Content. The first died at age about 1 1/2 years, and
the 2nd, born the next year - in 1676 - married Samuel Norton.
Are you descended from Maj. John and Patience Throckmorton?
I descend from John, eldest son of Maj. John and his first wife, Elizabeth
Baulstone. Maj. John divorced Elizabeth and had all 3 children by that
marriage disinherited and said the marriage had not been consummated and
that they were not his children. The 3rd one may well not have been his,
but I think perhaps his 1st child would probably have been his - and
considering he went on to have 9 children by Patience and 4 more by his
third wife, I suspect he did consummate that first marriage.

Karen,
I am also descended through John Coggeshall & Amy Dwelley. I
have not seen any records for the parentage of the first Jojhn of Newport but
I would also be interested in seeing them if they do exist.
According to records I have found (not verified at this
point) Amy Dwelley was the daughter of Joshua Dwelley and Elizabeth Round.
Have you been able to trace the parentage of Elizabeth Round?
