Thanks, Christian.
Take a look at this record and see if it strikes you the same way it strikes me:
31 January 1635. Richard Tankerley marries Dority Stoddert in Bedale, Yorkshire.
27 September 1636. Anthony, son of Richard Tankersley, christened in Bedale, Yorkshire.
24 February 1638. Vincent, son of Richard and Dorothea Tankersley, born in Misson, Nottinghamshire.
21 March 1640. Richard, son of Richard and Dorothea Tankersley, born in Misson, Nottinghamshire.
3 May 1643. George, son of Richard Tankersley, christened in Bedale, Yorkshire.
Bearing in mind that Anthony Tankersley, Richard's father, also owned land in Nottinghamshire (some of which he willed to Richard), and that Richard's grandfather was named Vincent, it looks to me as though these records from Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire could all be records of Anthony's son Richard, who would have been at least 17 at the time of that marriage in 1635. The geography throws me off a little, but the chronology and the naming patterns both feel right. And Anthony's son Richard is the only Richard Tankersley in parish records who would have been the right age.
Not definitive, I know. But interesting, anyway.
Merry Christmas,
Harriet

Harriet
I am not too sure now where I came across Henry, but I have him as c1560 in Haxey. He could be a brother of Vincent.
Your details do roughly fit in with what I have:
Anthony Tankersley - c 1575(?)
m. Elizabeth Garrett - 15 Nov 1597
They had 10 children inc Richard Tankersley - c 25 Aug 1618.
I only had one George, but he was born in 1826.
Kind Regards
Christian

Christian, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've done some extensive research on the Tankersleys of Haxey, and I've never seen the name Henry in any of the parish or will records. That comes as a bit of a surprise.
The first Tankersley in America was named George, and he was an adult by 1673. I'm looking into the possibility that he could have been the George Tankersley who was born in Bedale, Yorkshire in 1643 and that he was the son of Richard Tankersley (born in Haxey c.1618), who was the son of Anthony Tankersley (who died in Haxey in 1623) and the grandson of Vincent Tankersley (who reportedly died in Haxey in 1558). The connection from Vincent to Anthony to Richard is very well documented in parish records and will records. The connection from Richard to George is based on parish records from Bedale, Yorkshire and Misson, Nottinghamshire, which provide some added circumstantial evidence I won't bore you with.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Harriet

Harriet, I have quite a few Tankersley's in my tree, which I believe go back to Henry Tankersley born c1560 in Haxey. If you have a name of who you believe is the first Tankersley to America and a rough date, I can have a look to see if there are any possible contenders in my tree.
Regards
Christian

Christian, how extensive is your Tankersley family tree? I've become convinced that the first Tankersley immigrants to America came from that large extended family in Haxey. But I need to go back to the earliest (pre-1700) generations. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Harriet
