Angela,
Thank you for clarifying the John and Elizabeth versus John and Martha problem - I had struggled with that for some time and decided on 'two' Johns as opposed to One.
I too noticed that Jane was present and then disappeared, perhaps she died. Around the same time James appeared where previously he had not been recorded.
My current hypothesis is thus;
Jane died as a child? - I will attempt to track her death record.
John/Jehu is later known as James? - perhaps only a birth certificate would resolve this, although the prison/court records may shed some light on this also.
Keep in touch - if I uncover anything in relation to the Coggen/Coggan's I will contact you here again.
Regards,
Lisa

Thanks for your reply,
I have pretty much the same information as you. I too am confused about the children in the household.
The 1851 census lists a Jane daughter, 4 yrs old but there is no mention of her in the 1861 census. I have also thought that maybe the second 'John' maybe 'Jehu'? on looking at the 1861 census but in the 1851 census it looks as though this child is James, 4 mths!! confusion all round.
The two Johns you have found later on are the same person, this is my 2 x Great Grandfather. He married Elizabeth Gray first and she died 23/10/1882. They had no children together but she had a daughter from a previous marriage, Eliza Bartlett Gray. He then remarried Martha, my 2x Great Grandmother quite soon afterwards on 30/12/1882. She already had an illegitemate child, Frank.
It seems that remarrying soon after a wife's death runs throughout the family as my Great Grandfather Arthur also did the same. He also changed the spelling of Coggan to Coggen which is the way it is spelt on his headstone.
As for James, I have written to Wormwood Scrubs in the hope that they will provide me with some information as to why he went to prison. If I get any info from them I will let you know. He married Ellen Matthews on 23/04/1874 and died of pulmonary consumption on 07/10/1877. James was not present at her death so maybe he was already in prison?
I will keep in touch,
Regards,
Angela

Hello,
I have connections to COGGAN family as follows;
COGGAN William b.abt 1813 m(1) Elizabeth ????? b.abt 1816
Resident in Compton Dundon, Somerset children to this couple include;
COGGAN Henry b.abt 1835
COGGAN Mary Ann b.abt 1838 ** My family connections continue from this thread.
Elizabeth COGGAN b.abt 1816 (above) died and is recorded in the Langport District registers in the March Qtr of 1842.
William COGGAN b.abt 1813 then remarries a Mary Ann BOWLES b.abt 1820. Their marriage is recorded in the Langport District registers in the Quarter to June of 1842 (he didnt wait long, perhaps his first wife had been ill for some time?) Note: this marriage records William COGGAN as COGGEN.
Resident in Compton Dundon, children to this couple includes;
COGGAN William b.abt 1843
COGGAN Emily b.abt 1845
COGGAN James b.abt 1847
COGGAN John b.abt 1849
COGGAN J (could also be John) *** b.abt 1850
COGGAN Elizabeth b.abt 1853
In addition to this children Mary Ann BOWLES came into the marriage with her own child Henry BOWLES b.abt 1840 indicating she may also have been married previously.
Note: *** In two of the census' I've sighted for this family I am unable to make out the name of the male child b.abt 1850 other than it starts with 'J'. On the transcription this child has been recorded as another 'John' and although this is not common later Census records show two JOHN COGGANS;
John COGGAN married MARTHA (this would may be your relative) living in Compton Dundon children include;
Frank ATTWOOL (Attwell?) b.abt 1880
COGGAN Alice b.1883
COGGAN Arthur b.abt 1887
COGGAN Ralph b.abt 1890
COGGAN Kate b.abt 1894
COGGAN Ellen b.abt 1897
JOhn COGGAN married to ELIZABETH. Also living in Compton Dundon relatives in same house include Edith Jane Gray b.abt 1878 and Eliza Gray b.abt 1852.
I too can trace James COGGAN where in 1881 he was recorded as a Convict in Wormwood Scrubs, and earlier in 1871 aged around 23 he in still living with William and Mary Ann in Compton Dundon.
As mentioned my connections are with William COGGAN's daughter from his first marriage Mary Ann COGGAN who married Israel SAMS and whose daughter Mary Jane SAMS married into the GODDARD family.
Let me know if you have further information to share.
Regards,
Lisa
