Hi Kay,
If you are poking around in the Lincoln Archives for Coggans from Haxey,
you may be one of only a few in the last 35 years. Most of my direct
data come from a professional genealogist in Lincoln who was hired by a
cousin in 1969. More recently, I patched together relations among the
extended families from data received from another, more distant cousin,
George Coggan of California. He is one of the posters of our line on
WorldConnect. George gave me a print of microfiche- index data of
Cogan/Coggan Marriages/Deaths/Christenings in all of Lincoln. Many from
Haxey. Many from Epworth. Very helpful. I think that is how I garnered
limited data on Cornelius, son of John and apparently grandfather of
your Denby and father of another Denby.
So, I do not have many insights into the old Lincoln data. Yet I know it
is voluminous, detailed and organized. I know where the "Denby" came
from and I think it would be interesting to trace that line back as far
as possible. I have Hezekiah and his parents.
Since I did not have your Denby in my data, I would appreciate any
downstream info on this gentleman such as children, etc.
Interesting note .............I have an Uncle William Denby Oliver. He
never knew whereof his middle name derived until I informed him.
You can, of course, post your next reply to me, unless there is anyone
else on the list who would like to see it.
Ray Oliver in Missouri.
Dear Gladys
I had Hannah Pilsworth down as being christened in 1760, which is why I
thought she had married the John who had been christened in 1757.
Why OH WHY do they have to be so complicated? If parish records at
least contained the mother and father info we get from certificates we'd
know where we stood.
I'm still confused as to how we are supposed to know on this one!
I look forward to seeing your tree, and any suggestions anyone has on
sorting this one out!
Thanks, Katherine

Thanks Gladys, I can now discount John and Hannah as being the parents of
the John who married Ann Turner. If their son John married Susannah Mills
then he's not the John in 1841 Epworth census, whose wife was Ann (Turner, I
presume). This John could then be the son of Thomas and Catherine baptized
31/3/1788 - unless you want to claim him, Katherine? Or perhaps this John
also came from elsewhere to marry Ann Turner of Epworth!!!
You're right, Gladys, it doesn't help when they're all called John, James,
William, George, Thomas - why, oh why, couldn't I have the odd Amasa or
Absalom :o)
Good hunting
Carol

Hi Carol,
The John Coggon and Hannah Pilsworth are in my tree. They are my
ggggrandparents.
This line of the Coggon family came from Crowle but they married girls from
the local villages.
Their son James was my ggrandad.
Hannah Pilsworth came from Epworth and married John Coggon at Epworth on
29th May 1781.
Their son John (my gggrandad born Nov 1788 married Susannah Mills 2nd Oct
1815 at Epworth.
I can go back a little bit further if it is of any use to you.
Its great to see this list working again.
A big welcome to the two new subscribers who have joined us this week.
cheers.
Gladys.

Hi Katherine,
I have Thomas b 1730 in Epworth and Ann as the parents of John who was
baptised 26th May 1757
John was the father of John who married Hannah Pilsworth.
I wish they would be a bit more original with their names. It gets very
complicated.
It is difficult to know who is who. I had the advantage of knowing that
Hannah Pilsworth figured somewhere in our family which helped a great deal.
I do not know much more about Thomas and Ann except that Thomas was buried
at Epworth 1781 and Ann was buried at Epworth July 1797.
When I have a few minutes I will do you a copy of my Coggon family tree. It
might be of some use to you. I will send it off list.
cheers,
Gladys.
Dear Gladys,
I have John and Hannah in my tree, too.
I had their son John down as marrying Sarah Newborn in Haxey, 30Jan
1817. Where do you think I have gone wrong??
Any ideas on Thomas Coggan and Ann, further back on the same line? I'm
stuck on them, as per my earlier posting?
Thanks for any input,
Katherine

Dear Listers
Hello! I just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Katherine, from
Durham, and I am researching COGGANs in the Isle of Axholme area.
My currentbrickwall is one Thomas COGGAN who married an Ann and so far I
have found two children, John (1754) and Thomas (1755) both christened
in Epworth. Other than that I can't find any more at the moment, they
must have moved in and out again from Epworth, I think! Any information
would be gratefully received :-) !
Kind regards,
Katherine
you all do know if you get tested you might all know who you are related
to!!!

Gladys, thanks for keeping this very small list going.
Kay, if you have a Denby Coggan in your line , we have a connection.
That moniker originates only in Haxey. Denby is the maiden name of
Catherine Denby who married Robert Coggan at Haxey in 1751. See my
WorldConnect posting at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=roliver&id=I0969 . If
you would be so kind to contact me, please post it to the List for
everyone. Its not like this List suffers from too many posts.
I am interested in all Coggans from the Isle of Axeholme in
Lincolnshire. I figure we are all all related. I want to fill out the
tree from way back and going forward. Haxey, as far as I know, is a
hotspot for my direct line from at least 1660 , the birthdate of Robertus.
I am also interested in the line which produced the late Archbishop of
Canterbury. His widow died recently. Philip Coggan, the investment
columnist with the Financial Times of London, is in this line. I have
corresponded with him. There is a line of Coggans from Somerset and he
is of this line. I dont hear much about them but would like to know how
we are related. I dont even know where Somerset is located but I think
there may be a distant conection to the folks in Lincolnshire.
As for me, I am
Ray Oliver in St. Louis , Missouri in US.
A USA conection that only began around 1860 in Illinois
i am sorry i dodnt mean to send that to the list i thought it was off list

Hello List,
The list has been very quiet of late and it would be nice to hear from some
of you again. How about everyone reposting their interests please.
I have a Birth certificate which is of no use to me. If anyone wants it they
are welcome.
It is.
