I wanted to get other input before I put in any. I think everybody is
kind of on the same line of thought. In some respects "we", the GenWeb
folks, are kind of at odds with most society goals. This isn't really a
negative just how it is.
Historical/Genealogical Societies generally have a brick and mortar
presence in the community they serve. Actual physical libraries where
they store books and other records that have been saved from oblivion.
These sorts of things often have some dollar cost associated with them.
To raise the funds they need they have to sell something. Memberships
and copies of some records.
On the other hand there is "us". We generally have no, or very low
overhead. Whatever associated costs are generally easily taken care of
out of the volunteers pocket. Our goal is to place as much information
as possible online for free.
I feel that it is important that "we" support them as much as possible
by not undermining them and posting their material online for free use.
In one instance I adopted a county site that was also host to the local
societies web page.
http://www.argenweb.net/izard/ I have no issue
maintaining their page for them.
Now, as for them adopting a county site. I'm afraid there might be some
conflict of interest. IF they are allowed to adopt it would have to be
with a complete understanding of what we do and they would have to do
the same, and that they would be under the microscope.

I agree with everything everyone has mentioned so far. It seems that
I remember that buried in their original list of questions was a mention that they already
had a website and would that be a conflict. I think it would, because their normal focus
will still be their site and perhaps, and I hope I am wrong, gradually get rid of the
competition by removing so much stuff from the COGenWeb site, to render it useless.

Hi Gail,
I'm in agreement and for all the same reasons - especially when they want
to remove content. The "GenWeb" name is well known, so perhaps this is
what is driving their interest. On the flip side of the coin, perhaps the
society is looking for another genealogical society-related project. Hard
to tell, but I would say - keep the "status quo".
