Shaun Boyd wrote an article about Hangman’s Gulch in 1999 deconstructing
Albert Dakan’s much repeated story about a hanging and a skeleton found in
the area. This a problematic story full of holes and mis-information. So
far, research has not identified any documentation for the story. There
are newspaper articles about hangings in eastern Douglas County, now Elbert
County, none in the current Castle Rock area. No articles in the
newspaper, 1881 – 1908, have surfaced about finding a skeleton in the
Castle Rock area."
