Don,
Thanks for the update, I was almost out the door.
My main concern is having stuff work now, tomorrow and next year.
As for a router, I have a little box that my DSL comes out of. I guess that might be a
router. It has flashing green lights. I'll check it.
Lots of people use UNIX. I bought Linux Red Hat software a couple of years ago. After a
few days I smashed the CD with a hammer, literally. To each his own<GG>.
I'm out the door.
P.S.: Today our Reno Newspaper had a story about Vista in the business section.

To answer a few of these questions and add some of my thoughts as one who
has worked in the software industry for >30 years:
1. Microsoft office for mac is available and can read and write files that
are interchangeable with the PC version of Office.
2. DSLs can be hooked to multiple computers IF you have a router instead of
a PC card as the house end of the DSL. You can get the router if you don't
already have it.
3. Files can be transferred between Macs and PCs using CDs, DVDs, flash
drives, and direct network connections. Be careful about one thing Karla
noted before and one additional thing:
a) (as Karla noted) software providers often do not make versions
available for the Mac, and so any files you have that use particular
proprietary formats for their files may not have any software available on
the Mac to read them.
b) Software for the Mac is usually significantly more expensive than
for the PC simply because there is a very limited market for Mac software.
4. PCs, Macs, Ataris, etc., are just different varieties of tools. Each
tool has things it does better than other tools, and each tool has things it
doesn't do as well. Those tradeoffs come with price tags attached.
Investigate to know what you are getting into before sinking a lot of hard
earned cash into something that may not do what you want it to do (unless
your cash is just sitting around doing nothing, in which case send some to
me).
I have no personal dog in the fight between these different architectures of
computers. My personal operating system preference is Unix - perhaps the
only operating system my employer doesn't make software for. So enjoy
whatever works for you at a price you can afford.

Karla,
Can I exchange files between Mac my PC loaded an XP system?
I have perhaps 20,000 files in Word and Excel. Is there a file conversion?
I'm on my way in 45 minutes to visit the local Apple store.
I'm also worried about transferring my web files. At one time I had 45 webs
but I'm down to about a dozen now.
I thought about buying a Mac and set it up to learn before I switch over.
Not sure if I can hook up my DLS to two computers so the Mac will be
wiothout DSL for weeks or months while I learn it.
People send me Excel files. I'm worried aobut converting them donw the road.
Thank you for letting us know about the Macs. That is actually what I was
waiting for.

Having read all the emails about Vista and MS, I feel
I should comment. i have always used Apple computers.
My "newest" one is 5 years old. My husband and kids
have new models. My old (23 years or newer) computers
still work fine - most have been passed on to family
members, but I keep the really old ones to play with.
I have never had any serious problems with any of my
Macs. Apple support has always been able to help with
any problems - quickly and painlessly. If you have a
local Apple Store - they have an excellent live help
counter. For reliability and efficiency, in my
opinion, Macs cannot be beat.
The only drawback is third-party vendors are not
always quick to provide Mac-versions of software,
drivers, or whatever. However, I have found that most
of those products are not really the best anyway. I
was slow to go to OSX, but once I finally did, I was
very pleased. Of course, OSX is not compatible with my
oldies, but neither is a lot of my old software, so I
can continue to use them for "special" jobs.
In short, if any one is looking for a new system, I
would recommend a serious look at the Mac. They tend
to be a little pricey - but you definitely get your
money's worth.

Yeah, HP is on my s**t list too. A $700 printer less
than two years old is only supported with bare
minimum drivers. It is supposed to be able to print
up to 13" x 19" and duplex. Using their
"recommended" replacement drivers, I now can print
to a whopping size of up to 8.5" x 11, and no
duplex." All I can get from them is that if I want
to print in larger sizes then I will just have to
upgrade to a newer machine. I don't know about you,
but $700 is a lot of money to spend, just to be
told, "Sorry, we don't intend to support your
printer, so you will just have to upgrade." I have
purchased my last HP anything - even if my son's
father-in-law is in upper management of that
company.

Oh Don, are you SURE you want to go down that
road?? LOL!
Now Don - understand, I'm a computer programmer,
so I'm not stupid about
computers, but...
I do the website for our local quilt guild. The
lady that does the newsletter
had just gotten a new computer - with Vista, sent
the newsletter for me to
publish on the web, and because I 'just' have Word
2003, it did all sorts of
nasty things to my software.
My HP scanner (less than a year old) no longer is
recognized by the computer,
Frontpage will no longer create a new web site,
Frontpage will not open a web
as a web (only way to open it, is to open it
locally), Frontpage quit
publishing (I mostly use FTP, but on sites that
the users maintain, I used the
publishing) . . . and so on.... (I get several
errors that are so cryptic
that there is not any help when you search on it).
Oh yeah, for the Word
problem, I'm supposed to download some other
update and that will break who
knows what else on my computer.
I know I have an outdated machine, it's 2 years
old. But, I don't want to be
'forced' to upgrade. If I buy a new computer now,
it will be a Mac.
Betty
Who lives about 2 miles from HP, and am ready to
go throw their scanner onto
their lovely campus with a nasty note attached.

After all the email on this subject I don't know
whether to stick my neck
out or not.
As your local Microsoft representative (yes, I
work for Microsoft's legal
department), if you have any real problems with
vista or any other MS
product let me know and I'm quite willing to get
you in touch with people
who can solve it for you. Please understand that
all other vendors had more
than 2 years notice of what they needed to do to
port their software to the
higher security that vista offers, and many still
haven't started on it. MS
can't solve the problem of other vendors not
wanting to provide their
customers with a more secure computing
environment.

Pauli,
I suppose I'm lucky, I still have a PC under XP!
My
notebook (under vista) is supposed to be my
research
one, I hope it does the job. Your experiance is
valuable, and disappointing. but I hope to survive
the
experiance myself.
