Don,
Correct, I did not want to oppose any rule or bylaw or code.
I will tell you it bothers me to see the word pornography on our web site.
I wish it were removed.
I agree about good behavior, too. But I also believe in hitting back. Just one of those
personality quirks I have.
The whole issue of State Guidelines really does not have to be an issue.
For instance, when are we going to hold elections? If these things are written down and
agreed upon, it sure makes things go more smoothly for everyone.

I'm of two minds on this:
a) I'd love to see good manners and good sense ingrained in everyone's
behavior, but
b) I strongly dislike ill defined, unenforceable rules.
While Charles didn't voice his as a direct object to the code as written, I
will.
- I wonder why we incorporate something like pornography but leave out
murder, kidnapping, and child abuse. If we have to say something, couldn't
we just say we limit our pages to positive support for genealogy?
- I think the FCC list of banned words is way too short. I don't know
what other authority (other than me?) to use. For example, my wife believes
that cra* is a profane word and won't allow it in our house. I get offended
at "geez" 'cuz for me it's a shortcut for breaking the third commandment
of
the Decalogue <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments> . So who gets
to make the list for CoGenWeb?
- Ad hominem attacks <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem> , which
are the prevailing form of internet argument, are logically fallacious and
always inappropriate. Disagreeing with someone and presenting an argument
directed at the issue from fact, hopefully in a reasonably tactful manner,
should not be discouraged.
(and I like the way Charles presented his perspective).

p.s., in the 10+ years I've been with CoGenWeb we have had numerous
discussions on things like codes of conduct and they have always caused
division in the ranks, more heat than light, and lots of hurt feelings. So
after this post I'm ducking and running and letting you all decide what we
do. And whatever the final decision is, I'll continue to ignore it and live
my life as best I can. J

Sundee,
This statement below sounds great, but I have a few specific questions:
1. What are the profanity words which are forbidden?
2. Do we really have to state we are against pornography on our COGenWeb
home page?
3. Do these codes apply to CCs' private lives?
4. If a person tells another person they need to get Jesus in their life, is
that considered a derogatory statement? (It implies to me that is a way of
saying the person is an atheist or a Jew or a Buddhist or immoral or
irreligious.)
If a person says it's silly to want a vote, is that not a derogatory
statement toward those who want a vote?
5. If a problem can not be resolved, what good does it do to go to the SC or
ASC or anyone for that matter?
6. How did this code become adopted for COGenWeb? Was there a vote by the
CCs or was it handed down from somewhere?

We, the COGenWeb Project volunteers, adhere to a strict code of conduct in
our dealings with the public and with each other.
We refrain from using any profanity on our web pages, in our emails, or on
any list we may be on. We do not promote pornography.
We do not use derogatory statements at any time. If we have a problem
with anyone, we try to be as polite as possible, whether dealing with the
public or with another volunteer.
Whenever we have problems that cannot be resolved, we go to the SC or
ASC for assistance.
This is who we are, and who we intend to keep being!
