Well said, Dan.
Back in the 1990s when I joined CoGenWeb I was also eager to participate. We had a
supportive community, with folks like Lee, and I created the original Colorado place names
and the Colorado Counties Evolution sections of CoGenWeb. I used to get several queries a
month. It's literally been 3 years since the last query came to either of my
counties.
At this point I'm afraid CoGenWeb is essentially a ghost town. And when the mayor(s)
start insisting the owners of empty houses put fresh paint on them regularly, the houses
just get abandoned.
I don't mind caretaking the counties that over the last almost 20 years I've put a
lot of time into. But I'm not going to be spending time jumping through hoops when I
see no evidence any researchers even have a clue we exist. If someone else wants my
counties they can have them. If not, then let me caretake them at my pace and don't
bug me. If you want to know whether I'm still alive, ask me, but don't pester me
too often.

Subject: Re: [COGEN] MANDATORY ROLL CALL
Hello all,
A few months ago Don broached this subject and I wrote a general reply in essence saying
'CoGen, love it or leave it'. Times have changed since then, sorry Don.
Let's face it folks. The great era of personal involvement and interchange (about
2000-2008) is gone. Back then I could hardly wait to get home check the RootsWeb message
boards with active and fun ones such as IAClayton, OHBrown, NYNiagara.
As for COGenWeb, I had a wonderful time communicating with Lee Zion, the originator of the
Washington and Yuma county websites. Well, the washco site is still 98% Lee's. Since
I've taken over I have Arlene Glenn as my only correspondent and she just sends me
obits and veteran death notices.
I'm afraid USGenWeb has been on the decline for several years now and is entering that
stage where it is fighting for its life. I would have to say that aggressive ASCs
threatening coordinators with dismissal is one of the least productive actions I can think
of.
I would like to see COGen devote more time to recruiting new coordinators (I admit very
difficult to do now that the RootsWeb county and surname message boards have been
squelched by ancestry), tidying up its archives and website, and helping county
coordinators instead of threatening them. One step in the right direction, they crawled
the county websites last month and I sure appreciated the notification of washco's
broken links and omissions.
Let's see if we can make COGen more viable and not decimate the ranks.

I am with Don, not only the emails but the fact when someone asks for help,no one
responds, so Phillips county is up for adoption.

Clear creek and Gilpin are here. Seriously considering resigning so
if you find someone who wants these counties let me know. The tone of
the emails, threatening to fire the volunteers, is quite offensive.

Subject: [COGEN] MANDATORY ROLL CALL
Hi all,
The following counties still have not checked in for October:
Clear Creek
Gilpin
Jeffrson
Kiowa
You are kindly reminded that monthly check in is mandatory. Failure
to answer roll call for three months in a row is grounds for dismissal
from the COGenWeb.
If your county is on this list, please respond within five days.
