While I think you are out of luck on documenting a 1824 birth, never say
never. B-)
The modern Colorado counties certainly won't have birth records from the
1820s. Colorado didn't exist until 1861 and didn't start collecting birth
data until 1910.
Your search can't be limited to the modern El Paso and Pueblo counties.
Everywhere in Colorado within sight of Pikes Peak (about a 90-110 mile
radius) was considered Pikes Peak country between 1806 and 1860. That
covers an area from modern day Ft Collins to the New Mexico border.
The area of present day Colorado north of the Arkansas River and east of the
Front Range was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and was "Unorganized US
Territory" until 1854. The area south of the Arkansas River and west of the
Front Range belonged to Spain (Mexico after 1821) until the 1848 Treaty of
Guadeloupe after the Mexican War.
In 1824 there were very few settlements in the area east of the Front Range
(I can't think of any). Spain, France and the United States had all
explored the area but no one stayed. The Bent brothers fort on the Arkansas
wasn't established until 1829. The famous fir trading posts (Ft Jackson, Ft
St Vrain, Ft Vasquez and Ft Lupton) on the South Platte weren't established
until the 1830s.
There were early Spanish and Mexican settlements in the San Louis and Rio
Grande Valley southwest of Pikes Peak. Surviving records would be with the
local catholic churchs or in Santa Fe.

Subject: help?
Hi Lee. Beings as you are the one that maintains the map page, I am
wondering if you would mind telling me what COUNTY (or counties...) would
be near Pike's Peak? I am trying to do some genealogy research on my
great-grandfather and his death certificate states that he was born "near
Pike's Peak, CO" in 1824.
I would really appreciate it if you could give me a county name.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Mary Jane Moore
