I have a hard drive which is in the process of going down (on two
successive scandisks this morning it showed 8000 bytes in bad sectors in a
standard scandisk then 80000 bytes in bad sectors in a thorough scandisk).
Because of this, I may be offline this weekend (also am going to Sacramento
for the funeral of a classmate, so will be offline most of Saturday anyway).
Unfortunately this is the hard drive where all of my backups, family history
and webpages are stored. Almost everything is backed up on CD and on my
main hard drive (except for a backup of my other drive, which I can not get
off the bad drive... oh well), so I should make it through this ok.
However, does anybody know about Linux and the possibilities of dual boot
systems using Linux and Windows 98. I have heard that this will make
Windows 98 more stable. If I am going to be buying a new hard drive, I am
seriously considering a dual boot system (I'm actually rather fed up with
Microsoft, but that is an entirely different story). I want to try
something new, but don't want to lose accessibility to the programs I use on
Windows right now. What about BeOS? I have also heard that that is more
stable. I am looking for opinions and options. Any help will be
appreciated. Please e-mail me directly rather than clogging up lists all
over the place with this.
