A further comment on Colorado birth and death certificates.
Colorado did
not start the formal collection of death and birth information until
1910.
For a "certificate" prior to those dates someone will have to do a
bit
of
legwork. The best place to start is still the Vital Records section
but
early records are spotty and are primarily from the Denver metro
area. The
requestor is still charged the $15 search fee if no record is turned
up.
The next place to check is the county records. Information at the
local
level is very spotty. Using Yuma County as my example:
Wray vital records - births after 1886 and deaths after 1921.
Yuma (town) vital records - births and deaths after 1910.
County level records with dates shown as existing prior to 1910 can
be very
misleading. Since there was no state requirement to collect
information,
only those births and deaths required to be reported locally or
voluntarily
reported by the family or a doctor were recorded.
For more specific Colorado county information including dates of
local
records and points of contact visit the CDPHE Vital Records
