Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I uploaded a some changes to cogen web and I see several new
counties in the directory. No one has told me they have moved.. Let me
know when you get them up so I can change the links on the state pages. If
you post it here the adjoining counties to your should also see it and make
the changes, I will see it also.
If you want a county on cogenweb.com let Gail know and she will
let us know to set it up. All you will need is the FTP information for the
county which we will give you and then you can upload it. Let me know the
new url when you have it up, leave a page on the old site telling every one
your moved and then you should be all set.
If your pages are pretty simple and just have links to the other
pages like queries.htm and not the full address
rootweb.com/~alamosa/queries.htm then the pages will work in what ever
directory they are in with out changes. If you can navigate the site on
your local hard drive it should work with out change on a new server.

Every directory/folder on the web needs an index
file. index.html has highest priority over index.htm or some other server
set main pages. If you have both of them in the same directory and don't
specify the file name the index.html page will come up instead of the
index.htm or other page.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/
That's what I did with rootweb. The main page is index.htm so I put up a
simple index.html which says we have moved to a new website, click on the
link to go there because they taking down sites that have put up automatic
redirects.
It is something I've been meaning to say to everyone, when you
establish a new site, now would be the best time to change things since
search engines have not indexed the pages. So if you do not have an
index.html (recommended) or an index.htm page as your main page now would
be the time to change your main page to index and don't forget that you
have to fix all the links in your site that pointed to the old file name.
If your page editor can do a global replace it is easy to replace every
instance of main.htm to index.html.
If your directory doesn't have an index.html and some one goes to
it one of two things will happen depending on how the sever is
configured. Either it will display the directory contents if it's not set
up well (like rootsweb) and everyone can copy every file in the directory
or it will generate a 404 file not found error.

It is no different than rootsweb. You have your host address, you have your

will be a page there that says index.html and you overide that link or if
you are using index.htm delete the html link.

Connie, a lot of the counties have moved and some of the counties were
already on their own server. We are moving all the counties that are up for
adoption to the new server and have sent out passwords to those who
requested to be on the cogenweb server.
It is your choice as to what you do. You can stay with no guarantees, you
can move to another server or you can move to our server.
At this point the USGenWeb does not have a hosting agreement with TGN/RW and
nothing was solved with the banner situation. The banners will be added to
each htm or html page on your county as the page is clicked on. The banners
are for directing visitors to Ancestry.
I believe, last count 23-25 states have moved to their own server and more
are moving each day. The counties are following the move.
As I have said before, the county is yours and it is your decision as to
what you want to do with it. We cannot make you move.

I've made a change to help me keep up with the url changes, the
cowish.htm page was in the ccinfo directory and I've moved it in to the
main directory.
The new url for it if you have a link to it is
http://cogenweb.com/cowish.htm
That puts all the pages with links to the county sites in the root
directory except for the ssi/navigation.htm page. Before they were in the
root, /map /ccinfo and /ssi so every time I made an update I would have to
upload the pages to each directory now I only have to do the root and ssi/
I also fixed a bunch of URLs that got messed up, I'm not sure how
mostly pages in the /ccinfo directory. I also made the links to
usgenweb.org all the same, some were usgenweb.com

What is now in ~cophilli won't take much work to move into a new home. Just
forward the access details for the new directory off the list when you have
them.

As stated by Tim Sullivan in Richard Eastman's most recent article:
"Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this
happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to
advance this goal."
So, I don't think they are done, not by a long shot!
