There weren't many posts or army units in Colorado in 1873. The civil war
era posts had closed. The Indian threat in eastern Colorado was pretty much
ended. I can't think of any units at active posts left in Colorado besides
those at Ft Garland in the San Louis Valley and Ft Lyons on the Arkansas.
I answered the question about military courts in my other email. A private
could have been turned over by the detail commander to be held in Granite
City just to continue the mission but would have been picked up by another
detail to be returned to military custody.
The army of the era didn't pay well so didn't get "the best" but it was
hardly manned as deplicted in PC movies.

Thanks Lee and Karen,
More questions, if a troop was at Fort Garland would they be called to
escort a survey party in the Arkansas Valley? Would Jackson and all those
photographers who photographed the area around Leadville, Dayton, Granite
City have gone clear to Fort Garland to receive escort?
My thoughts that Jackson and other photographers came from the Denver area
but that is my thoughts. Would the escort have met the survey team and
photographers at a location and then proceed into the area?
I know it was the 15th that was the escort for this party. What I don't
know is would they hold court martial's in the 1870's at the location of the
incident or would they take the person back to the fort for court martial,
if they had court martial's.
What I am finding is the person who shot the two comrades was being held in
Granite City from Sept 1873 until Jan 1874. Surely the 15th moved on with
the escort and left this soldier behind... for the local officials to deal
with?????? I then find this soldier as part of the Leadville War as one of
the 180 vigilantes that was organized. And, then I find this man living
nicely in an Old Soldier's Home.
Did he get away with the crimes that he committed? Did he get to move on
with his life and live off the government in retirement?
I do not find him in any census's until 1910... nothing at all.... so from
the time period of 1874 until 1910 this man married but nothing can I find
on him.
I think I used the term "scum" in wrong usage. I just feel that some of the
men on the frontier were not the most respectable men of their time. They
didn't join the service for having pride for their country and what they
could do for their country but I feel that many needed a way to escape
whatever was following them.

Hi Gail,
In Pueblo County, there was Fort Lyons and Fort Reynolds, and Bent's Fort,
which was a trading post but the military were always there.
I would assume that they kicked him out of the military OR he escaped, then
joined the vigilantes.
There are many stories in the digital newspapers about the heroic Privates
of the military so I don't think they were all scum. That person was
probably the exception to the rule.

First, if my son is available I need a phone call, please!!!
Second, in the time period of 1873 in Colorado if an event happened was it
probable that there would be a court martial or if the person was tanked
when he killed fellow comrades, did they do a court martial or did they just
assume he was crazy at the time and let him go?
I am finding they held this man in Granite City for over 6 months for two
murders and then in 1874 he is with the Vigilantes who were involved in the
Lake County War. I am also finding that this man was living in 1910 and was

he get the privilege of living out his life, probably on the government when
two men are dead?
Were their other Forts besides Fort Garland which at the time was in New
Mexico Territory. These men were with the 15th US Infantry escorting a
survey party in Ute Country.
The Lt. of the party was later found in Pagosa, in Conejos Co., Colorado
which I am assuming is now Pagosa Springs now. He was in Ute Territory.
Also, were the Privates all trust worthy men or were they, how do I say
this, scum of the human race? See, I watched "Dances with Wolves" again
last night and those military guys were not nice guys.

Scott,
You might want to consider sending a copy of your page to Ellen Pack for the
USGW-Help Mailing list home page. I don't know if you have see it, but it
has links to several how-to-do and how-to-fix articles.

That actually looks good. And would help out new CC's when they don't know
HTML. I could create a page to teach them how to upload on FTP
