Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This is the excuse I need to work on more updates. Tonight though the FTP
will RIP. I am surprised Rootsweb did not warn us.

As a reminder, I have the domain name cogenweb.com. I also am on a new
server where I can host others and would be happy to give out accounts in
the form of e.g. www.cogenweb.com/adams or www.cogenweb.com/weld. I can
also host the state at www.cogenweb.com directly - and all of this with
individually assigned ftp logins, etc.
I have a lot of space, but not unlimited space, so large photo projects,
etc., might best be left elsewhere.
This offer is made to any CoGenWeb SC/ASC/CC. Let me know if you are
interested.

p.s., I'll soon be moving my counties to the above format. I just have been
lazy and haven't completed the move.

I do not have all the passwords to every county. But I do have the
passwords to lots of them and to some of the specials. Personally in
my opinion I don't mind having the last CC give me the password due
to the fact that trying to get anything from Roots web is like
plucking the hairs on my leg one by one rather than shaving them. So
that is what I do. I keep a small record of my own of the passwords
for each county that I have them for. When I took over I emailed
Rootsweb asking passwords to counties that were not adopted yet so I
had them. Then over time I have been getting some others.....but it
takes months on end for them to answer.
Hopefully that was what you were looking for Charles.

This was addressed to Sundee but I will try and answer.
"Usually" when a county is put up for adoption the previous CC gives the PW
to the SC so that they have it to give to the new CC. What is suppose to
happen is RW should be notified of the new CC and then it is between RW and
the new CC whether to change the passwords or not.
Don & I kept PW in IA, sometimes the turn around is so often that it is
easier to maintain the PW and then just give it to the new CC. I think that
is happening in most states. If the SC keeps a list of the PW's it is
easier to get the site adopted rather than wait months, and I mean months,
on a PW from RW and by that time you have lost the interested party.
Originally, yes... RW issued the site and the PW's but I don't know how
common that is anymore.
Also, with Sundee's permission, I will start checking all the websites in
Colorado for current updates, new State and Assist. Coordinators
information, checking links and over all appearance of the site according to
the By-Laws of the USGenWeb. This will be the main thing that I am looking
for:
ARTICLE IX. GUIDELINES/STANDARDS FOR WEBSITES/MEMBERS
Section 1. All websites shall include prominent display of The USGenWeb
Project logo on the home page. A state project logo may be required
depending on the guidelines/standards in effect for that state.

All this discussion is great but it seems to assume that all the counties
are hosted at Rootsweb. What percentage of the counties are at RW? I know
several aren't.

Good points Charles.
While I was SC, for security reasons, I kept usernames and passwords on a
floppy disk.
When Gail stepped up as SC she got all the passwords and usernames.
Following that procedure the websites usually adopted fast and the new CC
was off and running.
The usernames for a county of course never change, and if the password is
not changed, then the process really moves fast.
Only one time I can recall where I had to ask Rootsweb to reset a new
password.
That was after a former CC militiously messed the county project up.
It however is a small risk compared to the benefits.
Also, we always kept backup files for quick restore.
Cheers all.

Charles Barnum
That is a big task to check all the sites.
I'd be willing to help. I'm always here.
The part about RW and PWs is so true. There was some sort of change over last year at RW and all of my registrations vanished from Password Central. I was told to send them my Original email address when the web space was created. That is next to impossible. I've had at least four different computers and four different ISPs in recent years. I do not usually save emails either. Therefore, I can't come up with the original email address. For a particular personal web site, a person is sending me over 100,000 names on a disk very soon. I will not add those to the website until RW re-registers the web space in my name. I'll wait a few months and if no correction is made, then I'll delete it all.
I think there is a distinction when it comes to adopting a web site and an abandoned web site. The SC really needs the PWs for sites in case they do become abandoned to facilitate a smooth transition. But once the county is adopted by a CC it probably should be registered in his/ her name at RW. (Of course some folks have their own domains and that does not apply.)
Anyway, RW provides a great service to the genealogy community. All is well that ends well.
