Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

As Mary Ann said, someone "hacked" the main page and redirected it to their own
site. The BLM Gov Land Office Records search page is still functional
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp That is the page I have
bookmarked.

A few minutes ago I went to the BLM site [glorecords.blm.gov/] to look up some
Phillips County information. The site came up with a weird purple face on a
black background with the caption "Owned by PoizonBox". And, yes, it was the
correct url - went there from my favorites link.

Do any of you know what is going on? Has this been taken over by some virus or something? I'm quite ignorant when it comes to the workings of viruses, etc. but it's the only thing I could think of.
Can someone educate me? [Yes, I know - seems like a hopeless task! <g>]

Thanks for the kind words but I don't deserve much of the credit.
Stephen didn't tell you that his "basic rough information" was the product of at
least ten years of his research summarized in five 4 inch thick binders. He
provided access to copies of photos, letters home, bios and letters from family,
unit histories, news clippings, after action reports, service records, etc. It
was the sort of windfall that you hope for but seldom occurs. I am still
digging through his files to update the individual pages.
The sad part is the almost total lack of information that we found on Spanish
American and World War I KIA/MIA and non-battle deaths.
The pages are at www.rootsweb.com/~coyuma/data/gsvets/
Thanks Again!

If you haven't noticed, the Denver Public Library has placed part of the files
that we used to access via Gopher back online with an HTML index page.
See:

Along with the other records is an index of Denver obituaries and death notices

I too have had trouble accessing certain pages, plus I get site monitoring
reports on my counties, and my el paso was down a few times yesterday and
last week!
Along with my genconnect boards too.

At work I use Homesite, love it. Especially the global search and
replace, although it can be dangerous too.. At home I use text editors,
note pad in Windoze and WordStar 7 in non-document mode in dos, sometimes
in Windows, a couple of my personal pages are some what large and won't
load in notepad..
Homesite will allow you to hand code, and adds very powerful features. I
has a limited WUSIWYG mode which I have used maybe twice. Tried Netscape
Composer on a page and it completely recorded it and added a lot of junk
which drove me nuts so I don't use WUSIWYG editors, don't even like them as
text editors really.
The only reason I don't use Homesite at home is I'm running win 3.11 until
I can get a computer that will run Win98.

Yes Patrick, the Crosswinds site now has a redirect on it. I decided to do so
when Crosswinds place the popups, I was loosing pages and graphics, and
finaly could not update pages when I needed. I think most of the Counties
that were on Crosswinds have moved off as well.
Very few of the Counties are linked to the Crosswinds site any more. The
Rootsweb site has been back up since last Monday.

Guys, this is weird -- is it just me?
I went to http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4428.htm (March 7
Ancestry newsletter) and searched on Killen. Got 1 answer
Name Spouse Marriage Date County State
ROWLETT, J. N. HART, A. R. 14 Feb 1888 Henderson KY
Searched on Marsh: 11 results - none of em are MARSH
Any one else getting this kind of answer?

Rootsweb was only down for about two hours today while they did some maintenance
on users.rootsweb.com. Any other message traffic about rootsweb being down must
be referring to two weeks ago when they took the whole site down.

Sorry Patrick. You did say notepad and not NoteTab. I started with notepad
but found out about NoteTab. The program does quite a bit more than notepad
does, but still offers you the freedom of hand-coding. Lite NoteTab is a
free download. I used it for several months before I bought the NoteTab Pro
version. I especially like the fact I can use spell check which wasn't
available with notepad.

Karen,
I have to agree with Lee and Patrick. I just found out about it last summer
and that's what I primarily use. It's great and it has a library you can
download to use spell-check.

Karen
Patrick mentioned NoteTab. I use NoteTab myself mostly for the "directory
search and replace" feature.
For example, when I get an email address update from a frequent Archives
contributor (or I change my own email), I can set NoteTab up for a complete hard
disk, directory or subdirectory scan to find all the places where the old
address was used (much like MS FileFind) and then replace all of them with the
new address in one operation. It takes longer to explain how it works than it
takes to do it.
Even if you don't use NoteTab for anything else, I recommend you get a copy for
address/URL changes.
The light version is free. The Pro version is $20. ($30 if you want a CD-Rom.)
