Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Good evening all. I just wanted to let you know that Leona and Sundee are
taking over the County of the Month awards. From now on Leona will be
announcing them.
I would like to once again ask you to add Leona as Assistant State
Coordinator to your pages. If you need her email it is Genbug40(a)aol.com.
Please try to update your pages, as we will start fall sweeps soon. There are
some of you out there still using the old crosswinds url's. Please update
them, the old www2.crosswinds.net URLs are not valid any more.
Some of the Counties have main pages that have not been updated for some
months. We are starting into the slow holiday period, so hopefully this will
give you all time to get your pages updated.
------------
I would also like to announce that Sundee has started a Deeds project for
those of you who would like to add a link from your counties the URL is:
<a
href="http://www.rootsweb.com/~codeeds/deeds.htm">http://www.rootsweb.com/~cod
eeds/deeds.htm</a>
She just got it started the first week of October, so let's share the URL and
help her get deeds added to this great idea.
---------
I would also like to let you know I will be opening the Chat room again this
Monday evening. It will be as usual at 9:00 PM ET, 8:00 CT, 7:00 MT, 6:00 PT.
In #Cogenweb, on irc.rootsweb.com
We will be talking about Basic or even not so basic HTML questions. We need
someone with experience using Microsoft Front Page to field questions as
well. So if you have used it and would like to give advice on it's use please
join us.
If you would like to join us but don't know how. you can check out my chat
page at:

Or you can just email me and I will help you get set up.
I may be a bit late but, I hope to see you there!

Good evening,
We have 11 new photos added to the Colorado USGenWeb photos project and
a *NEW* county. Kathy, Bent County now has photo's. If you would be so kind
to add a link to the photo's project, it would be greatly appreciated. I
know your submitter would appreciate it. This is GREAT!!!!
Joyce, Otero county has another page of photos, thanks to Marilyn Allen
Kelch. We would appreciate a link to the photos page from Otero county if
you would be so kind to do so.
I would like to personally thank all who have visited the Colorado
photos project and have sent their thanks for making it all come together.
We have 5 counties that do not have photos. If any of you have Colorado
Photos of your ancestors, first businesses,
schools, churches, homesteads, old towns, ghost towns etc., you would like
to share, we would love to add them to the site. Several family connections
have all ready been made through this wonderful project.
Many counties have more than one page of photos. Don't forget to use the
links at the bottom of the county pages to view all of the photos.
The new photos can be viewed by visiting the Colorado USGenWeb Photos
Project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cophotos/index.htm
Look for the counties with the gold star for new additions.
Again, we have counties that have no photos. If you have any of your
ancestors from those counties, please help us reach our goal by adding every
county on the map with photos. We are all most there!
The new photos are listed in the following county: Archuleta, Bent &
Otero.
1. Archuleta (1) - Leroy Oldham - Rev. Dr. DeMotte
2. ** Bent (3) - Marilyn Allen Kelch - Mr. & Mrs. Allen, Mr. Allen & sons &
Mrs. Allen & daughters
3. Otero (7) - Marilyn Allen Kelch - Hansen family, Bacon family, Wedding of
Esper & Lillie Stjernholm, Boone Bacon and Emma Norton, Edith Elizabeth
Zumbrunnen, Emile Miles Zumbrunnen &
daughters of Emile Zumbrunnen.
Thank you all so much,

I think I agree with Leroy and Sundee, as genealogists we have to encourage
our researchers to take what information that they find and use it as a
starting point.
I know that I have helped many researching in my County I live in Ohio, and
have found inconsistencies in the variety of sources I find. I aways cite the
source for my researcher, but note the inconsistencies. County Hisotories are
usually bad for this. I always note that I consider them a secondary source,
and just a way to show some bakground.
I also agree we need to provide as credible pages as we can. If adding a
noteation is what it takes, then I don't see a problem with that.
Let the researcher decided based on his own other evedence.

Karen, etal.
I would say that a lot of that depends on who actually posts the data. If the
information is posted on a genconnect board then fine, let them post it, you
have no editorial responsibility there except as dictated by rootsweb. If it is
posted on a page you have total control over then you may desire to have some
editorial powers, these would best be used by posting a postscript or follow-up
article pointing out your thoughts or knowledge on the subject. Humans are
strange animals, they do not like to be told that they are wrong, or even proven
that they are wrong.
Sundee is absolutely correct, all information regardless of source, should be
verified.
Gail is also correct, once someone submits incorrect information to the LDS
church for inclusion in their records whether it be for baptismal or other
purposes, even the submitter can not correct it. But then again, the same can be
said for the DAR, once they accept you into the DAR regardless of how incorrect
your data may be. You are there and the records remain as accepted. There are
many instances that can be cited on both of these organizations accepting and
publishing incorrect information. Also, there is incorrect printed information
in book form out there that some incorrectly cite as proof.
The Death and Burial information on the Archuleta County pages was gathered by
Ann and myself for the Genealogical Society here, we did make mistakes and are
told about them from time to time, some of the errors were incorrect dates on
the tombstones but then some were our typos, we correct the typos but only make
notations on the incorrect dates on the tombstones.
What we advise new researchers to do (and accept this ourselves) is to take all
written and oral information (including family tradition) not as gospel, but as
a place to start. All information gathered must be verified.
In short, I would suggest, if you are going to accept information for posting,
you post data as submitted, and place a disclaimer on the information stating
the name and address of the submitter. You could tactfully post your
interpretation of the correct data, either on that page or link to it on another
page.

Well I do list what researcher's send in, but like I said before, for those
out there who get info from others they should still look in to it, or ask
the other researcher what the sources was.
I recently had a researcher get ahold of me, of course he would not send me
any files of his until I told him what all my sources of info were.
Turns out after he was satisfied we are 6th cousins.
As for info we provide such as the Census Transcriptions and Tombstone
project and ship passenger records. Well I am not sure those could get any
accurate?
So basically everyone should go look on their own for any info, although
the help is welcome!

HI Gail,
Thank you for participating in this discussion. What you portray here is
really unfortunate. I would encourage you to submit the corrected
information to SLC so that at least the researcher has the opportunity of
seeing both. So many times this is the exact reason why we have so much
erroneous data out there, no one corrects it. I even found a web site on one
of my lines that had a gedcom on it where the father was married to the
daughter. When I brought it to the attention of the site owner the substance
really hit the fan and he then refused to speak to me. Sometimes people let
their egos blind side their common sense.
In my case I have asked to submit the corrected data and it has been
refused. I am talking about our own USGenWeb Project, not SLC. I did find my
g-g-g grandfather in the IGI with incorrect data so I submitted the
corrected data. It took them awhile but eventually my data was added so now
everyone has the opportunity to at least see both and make their own
judgements. At least with SLC I had the opportunity to show the corrected
data.
Have you found data, pertaining to your own County, that is incorrect, and
can be proven incorrect? If so, what did you do about it? If not, what would
you do if this happened?
Again, my thanks to you for joining this discussion.
Karen Mitchell
Karen,
I'm one of those that wants the truth, even if it hurts.
There is some information on the IGI that is false and it was a
cousin that submitted the data. She never bothered to get any
proof, only took family stories. I was able to get documents and
prove her mistakes, but it is confusing to others when they see the
two sets of info that she has submitted. I had a professional that
was helping me on a brick wall...that we never have knocked
down,... see that info and said did you check that out?
Long story short? I don't want false info up there that can lead to a
lot of time and money going down the drain as we chase after
rabbit ghost trails.
I think if something was given to me, that I knew was incorrect or
was later proven to be incorrect, I would approach the submitters.
Tell them you really, really appreciate them donating info, but that
it needs to be corrected and if they pull it, there is nothing you can
do.
If you allow "known" incorrect data to be posted, then you and your
site are no longer credible.
My 2¢
Teri

I would like to start a discussion on:
How responsible are we for posting correct data to the internet?
As a CC of two Counties I feel that it is my duty to make sure that all the
data posted for my counties is as accurate as it possibly can be. I have
been researching for 33 years and feel that I want accurate data so that I,
in turn, will be a credible source of information for my researchers.
I have read with interest the accounts of the IGI being inaccurate and have
found that the advise is always "If it isn't correct, submit the corrected
information so the researcher has a choice to look at both."
If you have a contributor donate data that is a very blatant error, that
will lead other researchers in the wrong direction or give them false
information, what do we do about it?
If you have tried, diplomatically of course, to show the contributor that
the data is incorrect, and they refuse to see the error, what do you do
about that?
For example, if a contributor wants to post photos of a cemetery, and the
photos are great, but they have the name of the cemetery wrong, and you have
undeniable proof that it's wrong, but they won't allow a change, what do you
do?
As a CC, what is our responsibility to our researchers to present accurate
data?
PLEASE let me hear your thoughts on this matter.
Thank you,
Karen Mitchell

List,
I own a microfilm roll of the 1910, 13th Federal Population Census of the
United
States for the following Colorado Counties;
Adams, Archuleta, Arapahoe, Baca, Bent, Chaffee, Cheyenne, and Clear Creek
Parts of the film are difficult to read, and to date I have only done lookups
for Archuleta County, I hope to transcribe Archuleta this winter. If anyone
on
"This list" needs a lookup in one of the other counties let me know.

Thank you Leroy! This is a great! I am sending to Kelly so she can add you to
her pages.
Kelly, let me know the url when you get it up. I will link to it from the
COGenWeb main pages.

Is this a new method to get volunteers (with a copy of the Colorado Census)
in
touch with those wanting information from it?
It would be very nice to have an associated URL for a page with a Colorado
County vs. Census Year table so we knew what lookups are available.

Sounds like a great idea Lee. We need some new things to add to our project.
And from Kelly's reply below it looks like she is going to set it up for us.

Hi Lee, Yes the lists are an effort to get people with resources and
materials and also requests together to further our research. I just started
the lists two days ago and I am simply overwhelmed at the positive response
so far. I have my mail program set to check for new messages every 60
seconds and I am getting subscriptions notices faster than I can delete them
LOL I like your idea about the URL and I am creating a series of pages now
but I am not sure I want to tie the people with the books down by putting
them "out there". I know in my own life I have had times when I could do
more research for others and times when I had to back away so I am not sure
how others would feel about that. Now if I can get volunteers to allow me to
place their names I certainly will do that and I will make a note to bring
this up on the lists in a couple of weeks when the subscriptions have
settled down a bit. A few of my lists have already reached over 100 members
within 2 days so at this rate we could really have a great resource. Please
help me when and where you can by passing the info along to mailing lists
and cousins and I believe we will have something great here :)
Thanks for the idea about the State/County/Year pages ;)

FYI, if you would like to pass this on to your County lists.
