Hello All,
I'm writing this listserv note in hopes of soliciting ideas for use on
the website at http://www.cogdell.org. I'm the site administrator,
putting
in content when I find the time. It's been a slow year and the site is
due
for an overhaul, so I'd love to hear ideas on what we Cogdells would
find useful.
On the whole, it's been a joy to hear from Cogdells over the globe.
Everyone that I correspond with is interested in the site, and
particularly
interested in looking for genealogical information. I'd like to help
more
people, but have very little credible family history. Surprisingly,
I hear
from a lot of Cogsdell, Cogdale, and Coghill families (they live on the
hill,
you see; we live in the dell :)
Current ideas in the works include:
1) email addresses
The server has the ability to host email accounts, and it wouldn't be
too
much work to create a few accounts a week. If a
"yourname(a)cogdell.org
address sounds good to you, we can set one up! I would ask, however,
that you actually BE a Cogdell to get an account.
2) Australian, British, and US subpages
The Cogdell inquiries that I get come from the above three main
sources,
and it's becoming clear that we may be best served by setting up
areas for
each of these groups. If you or someone you know are interested in
creating
content for one of these areas, please write back!
3) A Cogdell email directory
A who's who and who's where resource.
My PHP programming skills have gotten sharper over the months, and
I'm
ready to do the development to put a guestbook up. I know, I know,
there are
ooodles of guestbooks available out there, but none that provide the
functions
that I'm looking for, namely, one line per person, anyone can delete
or modify,
etc.
4) Genealogical Information
Though the demand is great, there are issues involved in web
publishing,
such as copyright, right-to-privacy, verification of
accuracy/legitimacy.
My attempts at putting several "my grandma's story of the family"
histories
online ended in hurt feelings, so there are some hard limits on what
is
viable for online publishing. Nonetheless, the web site could be a
phenomenonal resource... but how to utilize it well? Maintaining an
online
tree is actually counter-productive, since accuracy can rarely be
assured,
and having two different copies of anything is bad form.
5) A Frequently-Asked-Questions list
What does our name mean in French? (little cook)
Did we come from Norway? (beats me)
Are there Cogdells still living in England? (yes, at least two,
anyway)
The site policies maintain that individuals and personal information
about
individuals are not listed on the site without their explicit permission
(right-to-privacy). Similarly, the works of others, publish or
unpublished,
can't be put on-line without written permission (copywrite). Please
keep this
in mind when cooking up new ideas.
So how do I fit into the Cogdell tree you ask?
Thomas Barton Cogdell b. ?
Thomas Woodbury Cogdell b. 21 Jul 1878 Corinth/Correnth, MS d.
13 Dec 1949
Thomas Houston Cogdell b. 17 Feb 1909 Camden, AR d. 25 Nov
1963
Thomas James Cogdell b. 19 Aug 1934 Quanaah, TX
(me) Kennon James Cogdell b. 04 Jun 1966 Summit, NJ
If you can help connect Thomas Barton back to the main tree, I'd love
to hear from you. If you've got grand ideas for the site, please speak
up.
If you'd like to help with site content, REALLY speak up!
Cheers,
Kennon Cogdell

It was great to see some activity on the Cogdell list. I was beginning to
think that everyone had completed their trees and left! :-)
I descend from Philip Cogdell (name changed to Cogdale circa 1800) and Mary
Archer who were married 1771 in Roxwell, Nr. Chelmsford, England. I believe
that Philip came to Roxwell as a Bricklayer or carpenter around that time.
I can find no records that he was actually born in Roxwell. I suspect that
he moved from Hertfordshire, because I know the Cogdell name is prevalent in
that County. I am trying to establish who Philip's parents were and whether
any of his brothers or sisters emigrated to the USA? I saw an entry in the
1799 USA census for a Joseph Cogdale in Claiborne County, Tennessee who was
a member of The Big Spring Primative Baptist Church. Does anyone know when
this Joseph arrived in the USA?
Thanks in anticipation.
Best regards,
Paul H. Cogdale

Dear COGDELL Friends,
The COGDELL list is a quiet one and sometimes has long periods of
inactivity. Several of you have resubscribed thinking that you were not be
subscribed, when in fact you are. I thought I would message to it to
reassure you that, "YES" the COGDELL list is still here.
I would also like to take this opportunity to start a "ROLL CALL" for
anyone who wishes to re-acquaint everyone with their COGDELL research.
I descend from Charles COGDELL and his wife Mary GILMORE of Pike and
Bullock Cos.. AL. I was stuck on Charles for many years and this summer
came to learn that he was the son of Ross COGDELL, who migrated to AL from
NC. Apparently Ross came to AL and did not like it very well and moved on
to LA. His nearly grown son, Charles, who came with his father, had been in
AL long enough to find Mary, so he stayed in the area of her family while
his father moved on.
Sincerely, Cindy Kirkland (COGDELL ListMom)

Does anyone have information on Joseph Cogdale who is shown in the 1799
census for Claiborne County, Tennessee and a founder organizer of The Big
Spring Primative Baptist Church of Springdale?
Best regards,
Paul Cogdale
