COGDELLS of NC
Spanish Attack on the Town of Beaufort, North Carolina 1747 (Cateret Co.)
In 1747 the Spanish entered Beaufort Harbor threatening the town. Militia
troops were hurriedly gathered under the command of Major Enoch Ward and
held the Spanish until August 26th when they captured the town. However,
Colonel Thomas Lovick and Captain Charles Cogdell gathered sufficient
troops to force the Spanish from the town by early September.
These are the COGDELL men that were on duty at the time of the attack.
Capt. Cogdell, Charles
Ensign Cogdell, Richard
Private Cogdell, John
Private Cogdell, George

Can anyone shed more light on this occurance in history?
Can anyone give us a perspective as to how these COGDELL men relate to each
other. Fathers, brothers, cousins? Since the COGDELLS were a singular
extended family located only in NC at the time, these men were obviously
related to one another. Since so many of the COGDELLS them were named
similarly it is hard to sort them out.
I am the gg grandaughter of Charles Cogdell of Pike and Bullock Cos. AL who
married Mary Gilmore, son of Ross Cogdell of New Hanover Co. NC and died in
Copiah CO. MS, son of Charles of NC, son of George.
