Hello All on the COGDELL List,
This list is brand new so I will start the ball rolling by providing my
COGDELL line. In hope that each of you, and each new searcher, will provide
their lineage as well.
The main counties concerned here are BULLOCK and PIKE Cos., ALABAMA.
My great grandparents on my mother's side were John Calhoun BRADBERRY and
Josephine Muriel COGDELL, married; a family source says Nov. 10, 1881 which
would have been correct for children's birth dates, but a Bullock Co. AL
marriage record says Aug. 10, 1887 (unless I am misreading it - could be
the handwriting, especially on the year 1 vs. 7).
A brief on John Calhoun BRADBERRY. He was born Feb 12th or 21st, 1861 in
Talbot Co. GA where we have traced back through his parents John W. C.
BRADBERRY and Harriett BARKSDALE and his grandfather James BRADBERRY and
wife ? Elizabeth ?, who owned land in Talbot Co. and is buried in the
ADAMS Cem near Talboton, GA. James was not original to Talbot Co. and we
have possibly traced him to some Eastern GA counties. Either he got around
or there seems to have been several James BRADBERRYS owning land in various
counties in his time.
John Calhoun BRADBERRY died May 5, 1921 and is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery
in Bullock Co. AL.
Josephine Muriel COGDELL was born Feb, 16, 1862 in AL to Charles "Charlie"
COGDELL and Mary GILMORE (GILMER). Josephine died June 19, 1943 and is also
buried in Mt. Zion Cem.
Josephine Muriel COGDELL and John Calhoun BRADBERRY had 8 children (in
order of birth);
Arby Martin BRADBERRY 1882 - 1938) m. Alice BROWDER
Edwin Earnest BRADBERRY (1885 - 1907) never married
Charlie Henry BRADBERRY (1887 - 1940) m. Annie Ruby VAUGHN (Aunt Ruby)
Clarence BRADBERRY (b. & d. 1890) infant death
Mary Lou BRADBERRY (1891 - 1890) m. Homer Lee MASON
John Frank BRADBERRY (1896 - 1932) m. Mamie Ruth O'NEAL (my grandparents)
Daisy Mae BRADBERRY (1898 - 1960) m. 1) W. O. HUGHES & 2) T. E. STRIPLING
I have more specific details on the above children if anyone wishes it.
We do not know Charles COGDELL's parents at this time, but we do know that
he was born in NC on Dec. 17, 1818. We do not know where he is buried at
this time either. More on the GILMORE/Gilmer line below.
Mary GILMORE/GILMER and Charles COGDELL were married Feb. 9, 1844 (Pike Co.
Marriage Records) and appear in the Pike Co. 1850 census with their three
eldest children. And the 1870 Bullock Co. Census with 8 of their 12
children. Three having left home and one not having been born until the
following year.
Mary's headstone spells her maiden name as GILMER and notes that she is the
spouse of CHARLIE COGDELL. Other documents, however, such as the 1870
Bullock Co. Census spell her maiden name as GILMORE (her father, Charles,
being head of household). So we look at both spellings.
Mary and Charlie COGDELL had a very large family. 12 children. Here is what
I know of their children, in order of birth.
Annie Jane COGDELL, b. 8-10-1845 and d. 12-13-1904, buried in Mt. Zion Cem,
Bullock Co. AL. She married James JENKINS and had 4 boys, 3 girls (we do
not know their names. Annie appears in the 1850 Pike Co. Census in
Charles
COGDELL's household. She is not in her father's household in the 1870
Bullock Co. Census, so must have married before 1870.
Emily Malissie COGDELL, b. 4-6-1847 and d. 9-6-1886. We do not have any
marriage
or burial information on her. Emily appears in the 1850 Pike Co.
Census in
Charles COGDELL's household and also in her father's household in the
1870
Bullock Co. Census.
John Henry COGDELL, b. 2-1-1847 and d. 10-29-1925, buried in Mt. Zion Cem. He
married Augusta WALLER (m. date unk.) b. 12-31-1856 and d. 12-13-1914,
also buried in Mt. Zion. They had 6 boys and 2 girls; one of the sons
being Henry COGDELL, 6-14-1883 and. d. 6-25-1915, buried in Mt. Zion Cem.
We do not know the names of the other children at this time. John Henry
COGDELL appears in the 1850 Pike Co. Census in Charles COGDELL's
household
and also in her father's household in the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
Matilda Frances COGDELL, b. 2-16-1851 and d. 4-29-1933, buried in Mt. Zion Cem.
We do not have any marriage on her. Matilda appears in her father,
Charles
COGDELL's household in the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
Mary Washington COGDELL, b. 9-5-1853 and d. 4-8-1937. We do not know where she
is buried. She married Shorter STOKES in Barbour Co. (date unk.) and had
two girls. Mary appears in her father, Charles COGDELL's household in the
1870 Bullock Co. Census.
James Franklin COGDELL, b. 9-7-1855 and d. 9-19-1940, buried in Mt. Zion
Cem. We
do not have any marriage information on him. James appears in her father,
Charles COGDELL's household in the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
Charles David COGDELL, b. 12-12-1857 and d. 12-13-1923, buried in Mt. Zion Cem.
He married Martha "Mattie" WALLER, b. 3-22-1861 and d. 6-5-1939, also
buried in Mt. Zion Cem. They had 3 boys and 2 girls. Charles David
appears
in her father, Charles COGDELL's household in the 1870 Bullock Co.
Census.
Martha Talula COGDELL, 2-22-1860 and d. 1-13-1950. We do not know where she
is buried. She married Bennie JENKINS (dentist) in Bullock Co. (date
unk.)
and had 5 boys and 2 girls. Mary appears in her father, Charles
COGDELL's household as "Lu" in the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
Josephine Muriel (see above) Josephine is buried in Mt. Zion Cem. as Josephine
COGDELL BRADBERRY. appears in her father, Charles COGDELL's household in
the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
Willela "Willie" Cogdell, b. 9-22-1864 and d. 9-5-1956, burial unk. She married
Robert BRADBERRY. Willela appears in her father, Charles COGDELL's
household as "Willie" in the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
Lily Cogdell, b. 7-30-1868 and d. 10-29-1935, burial unk. She married
James JENKINS. Lily appears in her father, Charles COGDELL's
household in the 1870 Bullock Co. Census.
William Ross COGDELL, b. 4-17-1871 and d. 11-6-1948, buried in Mt. Zion Cem.
Married Mattie "Millie" GRIDER and had 2 boys. He is not in the 1870
census, since he was born in 1871.
We are fairly certain the Mary GILMORE's family is William GILMORE and
Matilda PASEY or POSEY. William GILMORE was born 1805 in GA and Matilda in
1808 in SC. William appears in the Pike Co. Censuses for 1830, 1840, 1850
and 1870. Matilda appears with him as his wife in the 1850 and 1870
censuses. In the 1850 census 9 children appear with them. In the 1870
census only 1 child, Jasper, is in the household.
We think Matilda's mother was Martha PASEY or POSEY (but it very clearly
looks like PASEY). An elderly woman born in 1770 in SC (Matilda's birth
state) lives in their household in the 1850 census. In another part of the
county a William PASEY also appears in the 1850 Pike Co. Census and two
PASEY brothers own land in Pike Co. at the time. I have not found PASEY
anywhere else.
The children of William and Matilda GILMORE are:
William, Mary GILMORE COGDELL, Elizabeth, Eliza, James, Sarah, Joseph,
Frances, and Jasper. E do not know anything about any of these children
except for Mary.
That concludes everything I have on my COGDELL's. I'm still looking for
Charles parents in either NC or AL, and for Mary GILMORE/GILMER's line in
GA and SC.
I hope that you may have gleaned something new from all of this and ask
that if anyone can fill in the gaps or have any clues to help continue
these lines, I would appreciate a contact.
Sincerely, Cynthia SIMS Kirkland COGDELL List "Listmom"
