Searching for my Matthew (Madison S) Cogburn and I found the following:
15 Cogburn families in Alabama in 1860, according to US Census records.
1860 census Pike County, Alabama lists 6 of these Cogburn head of households.
David H Cogburn 57 b. SC Pike County, Mt Hillard P.O., Alabama
John Cogburn 48 b. SC Pike County, Mt Hillard P.O., Alabama
Samuel Cogburn 35 b. SC Pike County, Bruceville P.O., Alabama
James Cogburn 34 b. SC Pike County, Mt Hillard P.O., Alabama
Jesse Cogburn 25 b. GA Pike County, Mt Hillard P.O., Alabama
Robert J Cogburn 23 b.. AL Pike County, China Grove P.O, Alabma
Are these Cogburn men related? Could they be brothers? Cousins?
And something I noticed, at least 2 of these COGBURN families had
ROTTERN/ROTTON families living next door and had a ROTTERN/ROTTON boy living in their homes, and were farm laborers.
Were these COGBURN and ROTTERN/ROTTON families realted by marriage? Anyone out there know these families, and know the stories??
Any help would be appreciated.

Mary F

In 1930 Dallas Tx, 1-J PCT Census I find
Lewellyn Cogburn-- 40 -- Alabama ---Ala --- Ala
Becky A -- 33 -- TN
Hazel L -- 13 --TX
Lewellyn M, JR -- 11 -- TX
Madison S (father)-- 76-- Ala -- SC --SC

I am pretty sure this is Lewellyn Cogburn's father.
Is this Madison S Cogburn the same person as Matthew Cogburn??
There birthyears are the same 1854.
Anyone know about these families????

I am trying to contact Jackie Witten (or anyone else with information)regarding an old 1999 post she made. I was not able to make a contact with her at that time and my recent e-mail to her was returned as undeliverable - invalid mailbox. Her original posting and my recent effort to clarify/confirm her info are quoted below.

RE: your query on Cockburn. My Maternal grandmother was a Crow of Franklin Co. Her Grandfather was Joel Carlisle Crow, b. 1840 Franklin Co...The mother of Joel Carlisle was Elizabeth (Betsie) Blackwell Crow, daughter of William Blackwell, who married Jerusha Cockburn. Jerusha Cockburn Blackwell was the Daughter of George Willim Cockburn and Elizabeth Snyder Cockburn. George W. was born 1746 died 1854 in Franklin Co., Ga. my home town. He had a son named George, Jr. who to my knowledge did go to Al... If you believe this is the right family, I have some names and dates that may help and would be glad to share. E mail me, andwe can see if this is same person. Jackie"
Jackie: This a very old posting you made to Genforum, but I hope you are still doing genealogy and can answer a question. What is the source for the middle name you have indicated for the senior George. And is it intended to be WILLIM or possibly a typo for WILLIAM? I think the 1854 death date is a typo and is meant to be 1834 since that's when George died. I am also wondering if you might have any new information on the second wife question. My husband is descended from George's youngest child, Clark Terrell, and we are trying to document the correct mother for the younger children. Another thought--we do not have much information for George Jr., who supposedly did not marry, died abt 1847 leaving property to the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Forsyth Co. GA, and is buried in the church cemetery. Are you thinking this is the same George who went to AL?
I would appreciate any info on how to locate Jackie (note that she identifies her home town as being in Franklin Co. GA,) and would welcome any response which might shed light on these questions.
