Tomlinson Ford Cogburn, son of Cyrus Cogburn, was born in Georgia about 1818, son of Cyrus Cogburn. He married Sarah Branch on 31 May 1847 in Nacogdoches Co., Texas. Sarah was born in about 1833 in Tennessee and died May 1870 in Trinty Co., Texas. From the 1870 US Census, the following appear to be their children, names and dates as shown by the enumerator, so may not be totally correct:
Taylor Cogburn, born about 1848
Laura Cogburn, born about 1849
Millard Cogburn, born about 1849
(note the 10 year gap, perhaps other children had died)
Truemonia or Desdamonia? Cogburn - born about 1863
Sarah Cogburn, born about 1866
Modie Cogburn (male) born about 1868 (perhaps real name is Madison?)
Tomlinson Ford Cogburn apparently died between 1870 and 1880 and most likely in Trinity County, Texas. The following are found on the 1880 US Census.
1880 US Census - Justice Prect #1 Trinity Co., Texas ED 107 page 19 1
June 1880
171-176 Whitman A. Boon, 72, farmer, b. GA, both parents b. VA
Emery, wife, 64, keeping house, b. Ga, both parents b. GA
Jinnie Cogburn, female, 20, orphan, b. TX, both parents b. GA
Motty, 13, male, orphan, b. TX, both parents b. GA
172-177 Charles W. Boon, 29, farmer, b. FL, both parents b. GA
Sallie, 22, wife, keeping house, b. FL, father b. FL, mother b. NC
Vannie, 2, daughter, b. TX
Nevada, 1, daughter, b. TX
Emma Cogburn, 17, orphan, b. TX, both parents b. GA
The Jinnie (Jennie) fits to be Laura Cogburn in age. Jennie was a nickname for Jane, so perhaps her name was Laura Jane. Motty is a male and the correct age to be the Modie from the 1870 US Census. Emma Cogburn fits the age to be the child shown as Treumonia or Desdamonia on the 1870 US Census.
Does anybody know anything further about these children? I suspect the Boons simply took them in as orphans.
I have an Andrew Jackson Cogburn born 1856, son of James Cockburn/Cogburn
who died in Montgomery Co Arkansas. James was my gggrandfather. His son
George Washington Cogburn was my ggrandfather. James is the James no one
can figure out where he came from: one census says TN, one NC and he shows
up with Clark Terrell and the bunch in northern Arkansas in the 1840's. He
was Cockburn then Cogburn, can't find it spelled with two G's. Dad said he
knew some "two G Cogburns" in Arkansas, but Dad was born in Heavener, La
Flore Co OK, after his father settled there after statehood.
Anyway, I'm sure Andrew Jackson was a common name, just like George
Washington and later Robert Lee....
As to Jane, James had a daughter Sarah Jane, and later my ggrandfather GW
had Eliza Jane, Dad said everyone called her Lizzie and some Janie. She was
born in 1882.
Hopefully I haven't added confusion..
grins,
Sharon Cogburn Schipper in Oregon

Dear Jo Ann: I ordered the book BALD KNOBBERS, vigilantes on the Ozarks Frontier and it has the whole story about Andrew. If you will contact me on my home line, lane(a)grantspass.com I will send you the parts about Andrew that I wrote out for my files. I highly recommend the book. It is a great history of the hard times in Taney County after the Civil War that our families lived through. I think I ordered it through the Taney Co. Historical Society which I contacted through usgenweb.com . Every year the Taney Co. Historical Society does an outdoor play about the Bald Knobbers which often features the killing of Andrew.
I would love to have your information on the Coggburns. Mine is limited. I understand that John Shell Coggburn still may have descendants in Taney Co.
Pat

Dear Pat: As far as I am aware, no one has gotten past James Coggburn of Washington county, Tennessee. My husband came from Roane county, Tennessee and I have meant to research some of the counties more than I have in the past.
I'm sorry, but at this time I don't have anything on Joseph Stephens/Stevens. I would like to exchange information on whatever I have on the Coggburn lines with you.
I don't remember where; but I remember reading something about the Baldknobbers killing Andrew Jackson Coggburn. I believe it was over a song that Andrew had written and it became quite popular.
Hope to hear from you soon
Jo Ann
Hi, I read your post on the Cogburn's in Tennessee and was just wondering if
you had Mary Ann Cogburn? She was born in 1831 married William Vincent/
Vinson in Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1852. My great grandmother and a
brick wall.
Thanks,
Vernon

Dear Jo Ann: How nice to hear from you and thank you for contacting me. My husbands Grandmother was Ruth Ann Coggburn, daughter of James and Jane Mercer, sister to your John Shell Coggburn. When I began my search I had a lot of help on Coggburns from another descendant of John Shell. I haven't done much research lately but love making these connections. The last I heard the James Coggburn research went back to 1806 in Tennessee. Has anyone gotten any further with it?
The Coggburns and our James Stevens/Stephens were both in Miller Co., MO before the Civil War. You know what a mess Missouri was during the war. After the war I found the Coggburns in Taney Co., MO and my husband's Grandfather, John J. Stevens, was living with Jane Mercer Coggburn and was married to Ruth Ann. Their first son was then one year old and was named Samuel G. after Ruth's youngest brother. John's younger brother, Joseph Stevens, was living with John Shell and family. If you have seen the 1870 census you will find them there. It would appear that the Coggburn family took in John and Joseph as the rest of the Steven's family can not be found after the war. You wouldn't by any chance have any information on Joseph would you? I haven't been able to find him after the 1870 census.
Ruth Ann and John Stevens moved to Washington Co., Arkansas shortly after her nephew, Andrew Jackson Coggburn, was killed by the Baldknobbers. They are both buried there in the Cox Cemetery. They had 10 children, the youngest was my husbands Father.
I would be happy to exchange any information.

I am taking a shot in the dark that this will even reach you. My Father told me that he had a cousin who married a Homan and perhaps you are related.
I am a 3rd great granddaughter of James Coggburn and Jane Mercer and I descend through John Shell Coggburn and Elizabeth Ann Allen; my great grandmother is their daughter, Rutha Jane Coggburn. Cramer' my gandfather is their son, Leeroy George Cramer and my Father is his son, Harris William Cramer.
I have been doing research on the Coggburn for some time but I don't know what records you have or if you are even still interested in the research. I can tell you that I have all the married names of Jame's children if you desire them. I hope that this reaches you and that you might let me know if you would like any of the information.

I have discovered a very old piece of paper with what looks like quill ink on it, and it shows birth and death dates for two Cogburn children who I cannot place. Does anyone know where these children might fit into the Cogburn family chart?
Florence Bell Cogburn (female), b. 13 Nov 1894, d. 8 Oct 1895
Carlee Cogburn (male), b. 18 Jul (lived 8 days) d. 25 Jul (does not specify the year).
All of my papers came from Florence Heath Klingler, daughter of Pearl Cogburn Heath-->daughter of Andrew D. Cogburn-->son of James Polk Cogburn-->son of Clark Terrell Cockburn-->son of George Cockburn.
It seems like these children would fall into this line, but like I said, I have never heard of them. If anyone can help me, let me know. Thank you.

I am interested in getting a copy of the will of John Snyder from "Virginia Wills Before 1799." I only found the text online, and I prefer an original copy or scan. The will was written in Amherst County, Virginia, on 1 Dec 1777. It names his wife Elizabeth; his som John; his daughters Elizabeth, Mary Aaron, Rachel Brown, and Anna Jones; and his son-in-law George Cockburn.
Second, I am seeking a marriage record for John Snyder's daughter, Elizabeth Snyder, and George Cockburn. I have that they were married on 1 Mar 1773, and this was most likely in Amherst County, Virginia. They might be mentioned in the Amherst County Marriage Index.
I would also like a copy of a land deed from John Snyder to his daughter and his son-in-law George Cockburn in 1773 in Amherst County, Virginia. I have been told there is mention of the deed in a book of Abstracts of Amherst County Land Deeds. I would like a copy of the abstract or the actual deed.
If anyone has access to these sources or any has any information about these people, please let me know. Thank you.
Elizabeth
