UPDATE ON CW INFO FOR JAMES B. CARLTON
James B. Carlton did not die in the CW. He went in as a Corporal and left as a Private. He enlisted 24 Feb 1862 for 12 months, but apparently re-enlisted as muster roll cards give info Feb 1864.
Also found he married Elizabeth Cogburn 16 Jan 1856 in Rusk Co, TX ; he also married Jane (MNU) Hardin 1 Dec 1857 in Itawamba Co, MS, abandoned Jane after impregnating her (child was born 6 Oct 1858) and James was found in 1860 Newton Co TX Census:
1860 U.S. Census, Newton Co, TX, PO Newton, p. 263
CARLTON, J.B., head, age 25, Farmer, prop value 300, pb. AL
Elizabeth, age 19, pb. GA /
Martha M, age 11/12, pb. TX /
James, age 52, Domestic, pb. SC /
Joel , age 18, Domestic, pb. AL /
John , age 17, Domestic, pb. AL /
Latimore, age 11, pb. MS /
Note: The older James was the father of James B; Joel, John & Latimore were brothers of James B.
Did James leave Elizabeth Cogburn, return to Itawamba Co, MS, marry Jane, live with her just a few months then return to TX and take up his life with Elizabeth? Can anyone help?
Thank you,
Emma (Shrum) Butler Duke
Seeking info on the family of James B. & Elizabeth (Cogburn) CARLTON.
James b. ca 1835 AL, son of James Columbus & Elizabeth (Akin/Aiken) CARLTON.
Elizabeth Cogburn b. 1841 GA, dau of Jackson & Martha Ann (Grace) Cogburn.
James & Elizabeth married ca 1858, probably in Newton Co, TX
Their children:
1. Martha M. b. ca Jun 1859 in TX
2. William b. 1862 TX
James B. CARLTON d. 1864 killed in CW. I don't have documentation on this, but it is probably correct.
1870 Elizabeth and her two children are living with her parents, Jackson & Martha (Grace) Cogburn in Newton Co, TX.
1880 I can't find Elizabeth, Martha or William, here is my dilemma:
1880 Census Newton Co TX, I find living with Jackson & Martha (Grace) Cogburn: Trojan Carlton age 17 [b. 1863] and Emma Carlton age 15 [b. 1865]. They are listed as grand son & grand dau. Who are these children? Is Trojan, William b. ca 1862? Is Emma, Martha M. b. 1859, she would be 21 not 15?
Did Elizabeth remarry 1870 - 1880? If so, to whom?
James B. Carlton married our g g grandmother, Jane (maiden name unk) Hardin/Harden, 1 Dec 1857, Itawamba Co MS. Jane's deceased spouse was George A.B. HARDIN. James CARLTON & Jane had one child, Frances Catherine b. 6 Oct 1858. James deserted the family before 1860 as Jane is head of hhold and using the name Jane HARDIN/HARDEN.
Any help with the family of James B. & Elizabeth is greatly appreciated.

Annette,
I would love to get in touch with you.
I am the Granddaughter of Bill Cogburn (William Henry) , your Grandmother Bell's brother. I am researching my family line, and can't find anyone who knows much about our Grandparents. They were triplets, born to Phillip Nathan and Mary (Dalton) Cogburn.
I also found your Grandmother in Pike Co. Census, where she was married to Willis Whately, and then to Dave Garner.I go to church with Dave's son, Travis Garner.
Please contact me, as I would love to share info on our families.
Thanks,
Reva (Cogburn) Turner
