Hi Sharon, and whoever else may be on this list...
I think name stories would be of interest as well...
We spell our name with 2 G's. Coggburn... It has been traced back to James
born 1806 in Tennessee (Yes, one of several) but it was spelled with two G's
back that far and has continued... However after the family moved to
Missouri some of the Children moved on and changed the spelling to have only
one g... It just makes it harder for us to tie in the loose ends......
Judy Coggburn
COGBURN-COBURN-COGGBURN-COCKBURN-COCKBURNE and probably some other
spellings, all come from the Scots Cockburne, pronounce co-burn. Several
stories of how it was changed, including the strict presbytarian sisters in
Georgia who thought that cock-burn was unseemly....one of my g-greats was
Cockburne on one census, and Cogburn next and the name stayed that way.
Anybody else have stories of how and why the name was changed? We have
seemed to always be a literate family, so the census taker story may apply.
The original southern Cockburne's who came were from a Scots line that
included an advisor to Queen Mary of Scots, men who were responsible for the
Great Seal of Scotland, and a British admiral during the Revolution, (even
though these Cockburnes had come to America in the 1740's.) Has anyone
found the name as Cogburn or Cogg- in the immigration lists? So far, I
haven't heard of any from anyone, but that doesn't mean there aren't, just
that I haven't heard it! heaven knows I haven't been doing this but for
about 4 years.... I'd sure be interested in other name stories just for
curiosity sake!

Melissa,
I am another Judy, with the spelling of Coggburn...
I would like to see that picture as well....
I have been out of the Genealogy loop for a while, but have not lost interest...
Seems that the Coggburns and the Cogburns are often interchanged and that even some of the Coggburns later changed the spelling and dropped one G.
Thanks, Judy
