Looking for anything on Michael J. Cogan, born Cobh Co. Cork late
1880's. Have been told that he was a member of the Boston PD. Parents
were John Cogan & Elizabeth (Bessie) Ahern, married Cobh 25th Sep.
1883. Don't know as yet if they immigrated.
Michael J. Cogan was married and had decendants, no details on them yet.
Colman Ahern,
Berkeley.
My family line goes back to Cogans who were living in Sandy Twp.,
Tuscarawas Co., Ohio by 1820. The name was often spelt Kogan, along with
other variations. It seems likely that this family came from Bedford Co.,
Pa., and were of German origin. (They were almost certainly not Irish or
English. They were quite likely related to the Kooken family of this area.)
There appear to have been 5 brothers: Jacob, Daniel, Samuel, John, Michael
and Joseph, born between 1790 and 1815, all of whom had at least one son.
Most of these brothers moved away from Tuscarawas County, and by 1900 their
descendants were, or had been, in the following counties:
in Ohio:
Stark, Carroll, Coshocton, Holmes, Jackson, Highland, Lucas, Cuyahoga, Portage
in Indiana (where the spelling became Kogin:
Wabash, Stuben, DeKalb
and in Michigan:
Isabella, Jackson, and perhaps Wayne and Oakland
I would like to hear from anyone who is researching these lines.
