Thanks for that summary. I hadn't been aware of the various Irish Cogans.
People who track down Cogans in the United States need to be aware that not
all Cogan families are of Irish origin.
I know of 4 distinct groups of Cogans in North America.
1. Some Cogans from Somerset County, England, were among the earliest
settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630's. I don't know if or
for how long their surname survived in North America
2. Cogans in Pennsylvania and Ohio from the mid 1700's. This family is of
German origin, and the name has gone through many spelling variations -
Kogan, Koken, Cogin, Kooken, and other more imaginative renderings by
county clerks. This is my family.
3. Cogans from Ireland - see Mike's summary
4. Cogans (often spelt Kogan) from Russia, probably of Jewish origin, since
Kogan is a Russian variation of the name Cohen. I believe that they rarely
appear in North America before, say, 1900.

I am researching the family of Thomas W. Cogan, possibly born in Coleraine,
Northern Ireland, living in the Mississippi Territory in the area that
became Claiborne Co., MS. His wife was Rebecca Foster (maiden name not
proven.) Thomas died in Claiborne Co. in 1833. His widow was in Jefferson
Co., MS, in the 1840 census and died in 1841. They had 8 children.
There was a Patrick Cogan in the 1792 census of the Miss. Terr. His wife was
Nancy and they had 3 daughters. I don't know how they were connected to
Thomas W.
I would love to hear from anyone researching this family.
Annette
