Hello everyone,
You have a newcomer in your midst and one eager for information. I am very
much a new boy at this and have only managed to get back to the middle part
of the 19th. century and I'm hoping this message reaches someone who can
help me start moving further back.
MICHAEL COGAN (Cugeran) was born in Bockagh, Ballaghaderrin, Co. Roscommon,
Eire, on January 11th. 1881, the son of THOMAS CUGERAN, a small farmer, and
HONORIA CUGERAN (formerly FRAIN) who had to make her mark on the wedding
certificate as she couldn't sign her own name.
He left Ireland when he was 13 in search of work and by the time he was
married, on October 21st. 1911, Michael's surname had changed to Cogan.
He was living at 480, Fleet Lane, Parr, St. Helens, Lancashire, when he
married MARY LEE, daughter of RICHARD LEE, of 77, Station Road, Haydock, St.
Helens, at English Martyrs Church, Haydock.
Great grandfather Richard (b. 1868) was a 24 year old widower and coal miner
living in Taylor Square, Westleigh, Leigh - the son of THOMAS LEE, also a
miner - when he married MARGARET ANN CARROLL (b. 1873), the 19 year old
daughter of PATRICK CARROLL, a fireman, of 16 Albert Street, Pemberton,
Wigan.
They were married at Twelve Apostles School Chapel, Westleigh, on June 4th.
1892.
Michael and Mary Cogan had a total of 15 children, 12 of whom lived to
adulthood:
MARGARET (PEG) - b. January 20th. 1914, d. January 1957
MARY (MOLLY) - b. December 16th. 1914, d. October 8th. 1986
ELLEN - b. February 22nd. 1916, d. March 1998
CATHERINE (KITTY) - b. February 5th. 1917, d. October 25th. 1993
MICHAEL (MICKEY) - b. March 25th. 1918, d. August 22nd. 1989

Iceland

Newton-le-Willows. This is my Mother
THOMAS PATRICK - b. November 20th. 1929, d. July 1930, aged just nine months
BRIDGET (DELIA) - b. February 4th. 1932, d. April 20th. 1975
I am in the process of producing a GedCom history for the family and will
post it as soon as it's completed.
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give on tracing my line
further back and/or discovering the meaning of the name and its variants.
The only other clue I have is that I believe the family originated in the
Cork area of Eire, but I have no idea how many generations back that is.
Thanking you in anticipation of your future help.
Regards,
Mike Birkett
