There appear to be two Ira Cogans born in or near Carroll Co., Ohio in the
1870's.
From the Ohio Death Index-
Cogan Ira P Carroll Co. 3-7-1922 (MDY of death) vol 3819 cert 13328
and
Cogan Ira A Alliance, Stark Co 17 Oct 1958 age 84 y. Widowed vol 74038
cert 15570
These are taken from on-line copies of selected years of the ODI. Formats
are somewhat different for the two time periods.
Ron has found for the grave markers in Augusta Cem, Carroll Co:
> > Cogan, Ira P. 1871-1922
> > (English) Carrie 1877-1959
> > Carl F. 1900-1943
> > Elbertine 1902-1919
> > Kenneth 1928-1932
So here we have Ira P Cogan born in 1871 (grave marker) and Ira A Cogan
born in 1873/74 (ODI).
I do not find a Carrie Cogan among the Cogans I collected from the online
1958-1967 ODI.
The 1880 census shows the household of Lomas Cogan with child Ira Allen
Cogan aged 6 - which fits with the ODI age above.
Tom quotes Jim Hartline's FGS:
>Gen 3
>Ira J Cogan 1874-1958
>Carrie Pearson (could be Bertha, given two ways)
Could it be that Ira P's and Ira A's (here called Ira J) wives have been
confused? If Carrie really is Ira P's wife, then could Bertha be Ira A's?
And which one was a Pearson. Does the grave marker mean that Carrie's
maiden name was English?
Tom says:
>I don't remember that anyone had a positive on Steelsmith-- except the
>Koger in the marriage record.
Here's what I have.
*In the Tuscarawas Co. Marriage Records (Bk 1, p.255, No. 2034)
Joseph Hogue & Sarah Steelsmith 31 May 1835
(I have recently looked at the LDS film and it is quite clearly "Hogue")
*The 1870 census shows in, Pike Twp., Stark Co.
Joseph Cogan 58 Ohio
Sarah 53 Ohio
Amanda 17 Ohio
Joseph F 12 Ohio
Sarah Steelsmith 76 Pa
*Loomis is identified as the son of "Joseph and Sarah Cogan, who came from
Pennsylvania in pioneer days." in _Old Landmarks of Canton and Stark
Counties" - one of those county histories.
Regards,
Bruce
