Hi, My name is Maria Mastin. I read your query in the COGAN list and I know
that you are looking for the McManuses from Sligo, but I wonder if you could
help me. I know that my Cogan family came from Sligo. I noticed that you
mentioned a Bridget Cogan in your query as being a witness to a baptism. My
Cogan family is as follows:
John Cogan (father) married Mary Sheridan, both from Sligo.
children (all born in Sligo)
John Cogan born May 1826 married mary Gallagher abt 1867.
Thomas Cogan b 21 Dec 1833 married Margaret Glynn abt 1866.
Bridget Cogan b 1 Feb 1818 married Anthony O'Boyle.
Patrick Cogan b. Mar 1822 married Sarah Monahan.
All emigrated to Glynnwood, Auglaize county, Ohio.
That was another thing that I noticed in your query: the Boyle Town.
I wonder if Anthony O'Boyle and Boyle Town means anything?
Any help that you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks, Maria Mastin

My great grandfather, John McManus, came to County Durham, England around
1848 when he was 10. He stated in the 1871 Census here that he was born in
Keadue. His brother, Thomas, stated he was born in Ballyfarnan.I have found
what I believe to be John's baptism in the Keadue church records and, as he
stated at his marriage, his father was James. In his baptism record his
mother is Elizabeth Kelly and the witnesses are James McManus and Bridget
Cogan. John and Thomas married 2 Kerins/Kearns sisters, Bridget and
Elizabeth. Their parents were Michael and Elizabeth Kerans/Kearns. They
stated they were from County Roscommon too. In 1869 John and Bridget returned
to North Roscommon and Bridget gave birth to Thomas, my great uncle, there.
His baptism is in the church records at Boyle which state John and Bridget
were residing in Boyle Town. I have been unable to locate the McManus's
townland with any certainty. It may be that they were just into Sligo. So I
wondered if anyone on this site had any information which would help. I use
the Leitrim/Roscommon Genealogy site. If there is anyone interested in
McManuses from the Geevagh area who came to County Durham as a result of the
famine, I do have some details, of one family in particular, and will be
pleased to pass them on. Thank you. If you want to visit my web pages the
