Good Morning Listees,
Migrations Site...from denning list
This is a brand new site, check it out!
And please pass the link on to others...
These folks have [and are doing] a great job!
You can locate migration patterns and family details in various counties and
states you are interested in. Also find others researching people who
migrated in similar patterns. You can also do a lookup by any surname (but
they need more submissions, so you may or may not find your own surname that
you are researching at this time as it is a very new site.)

Clans of Breifne (Leitrim/Cavan)
>From "O'Rourke Strongholds of West Breifne" by Dunta Ui Ruairc
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--
Dr. Connellan's Notes on the Cheifs and Clans of Breifne. The chiefs and
clans of Brefney and the territories they possesed in the twelfth century,
are, according to O'Dugan as follows:
(O'Rourke) O'Ruaire or O'Rourke, who is designated by O'Dugan, Ardigh Breifne
as buan smacht, that is, chief king of Brefney of lasting sway, and to whom,
he states, the rents or tributes of Connaught were paid.
(O'Reilly) O'Raghallaigh or O'Reilly, chief of Muinter Maoilmordha,
designated as: "Head chief of the fierce conflicts, O'Reilly of the red arms
or shields."
(Masterson/MacTieran) Mac Tighearnain or Mac Tiernans, also rendered
Masterson, who where the chiefs of Tealloach Dunchadha, signifying the tribe
or territory of Donogh, so called from on of thier chiefs, an name which has
been made Tullaghonoho, now the barony of Tullyhunco, in the county of Cavan.
Mac Tiernan is disignated as "the true defender of valient chiefs." The Mac
Kernans are still very numerous in the counties of Cavan and Leitrim, and
several of their chiefs are mentioned in the course of these Annals.
(Mac Gauran/Somers) Mac Samhardhain, designated "a bond of strength", who was
chief of Teallach Eachach, or Eachaidh, which signifies of the tribe or
territory of Eachy, so called from one of thier chiefs, and now teh barony of
Tullaghagh, county of Cavan. This name is now generally made Mac Gauran, and
by some anglicised , or rather translated, Somers, from the word Samharadh,
which signifies summer. The Mac Gaurans in modern times are very numerous in
the counties of Cavan and Leitrim and many chiefs of the name are mentioned
in Annals.
(Ford) Mac Conasnamha, cheif of Clan Cionnath, or Clan Kenny now, known as
the Muinter Kenny mountains, and adjoining districts, near Lough Allen, in
the parish of Innismagrath, county of Leitrim. This name has been anglicised
to Ford, and there are several of the clan still in those districts. Mac
Consnamha is as a chief in those Annals, A.D. 1252.
(Cogan/MacEgan) Mac Cagadhain, chief of Clan Fearmaighe, a district of south
of Darty, and in the present barony of Dromahaire, county of Leitrim. This
name has been anglised Cogan or Coggan. O'Brien, in his Dictionary, at the
Eagan, states that Mac Egan where chiefs of Clanfearamuighe in Brefney: hence
Mac Cagadhaim and MacEagain may probably have been the same clan.

In Reply to: Coogan/Cogan/Henry/Lamb - Using Truth Tables by Michael Ronayne
of 11191
Carol,
Assuming that the Coogan/Cogan, Henry & Lamb party, know each other before
emigrating from Ireland, I did the equivalent of the three way relational
join of these three surnames at the Parish level and found that there are
only 19 Parishes in Ireland where all three surnames occur together. The
limited number of Mc Henry’s were not included.
Based on the way the data clusters, I would recommend that you first focus of
Cos. Monaghan and Dublin in that order. The names Thomas Coogan and Willian
Coogan appear in the Co. Dublin list. Remember what I said about statistics!
I hope this is of assistance, Mike Ronayne

Note to all forum readers:
I do not as yet have an automated set of software tools which will do the
type of relational operations I would like to do, without violating the
Broderbund Software’s (a.k.a. Family Tree Maker) Copyright of the Griffith
Database. The ideal solution would be to have Griffith’s available as a
Relational Database such as Microsoft Access, where it would be fairly easy
to do the joins; but, to do this I would have to download the entire database
from the CD and thus the Copyright problem. If there is anyone from FTM
reading this, I think that such a tool would be of great value of
genealogical researches investigating their Irish roots. I will try to post
instructions over the next few weeks of various issues associated with
getting usable quantities of data from the Griffith’s CD to a spread sheet
such as Excel or Lotus, which do not violate fair usage clause of the
Copyright. Those who wish to do this must have a good understanding of such
tools, as well as the use of advanced text editors. The real trick is to get
large enough quantities of data exported from the FTM system and imported
into the appropriate analytical tool sets do get the job done. For now I am
going to have to limits how many N’Way Joins I do for others, on this for
forum, as they are just to time consuming. If there is anyone aware of an
automated tool set, which will expedite this type of process, please post the
information. If you are interested in doing this type of research, order the
CD from Family Tree Maker and start looking for my posts. The important thing
is that it can be demonstrated that a 3’Way join can be done with the data in
Griffith’s! The next question is will it yield useful results?

In Reply to: Re: Coogan/Cogan - County in Ireland? by Carol Coogan of 11191
Carol,
In addition to the County distribution of the Coogan/Cogan surname, the
County distribution for the surnames Henry and Lame may be of value. If all
three families know each other before they emigrated from Ireland, then you
should be able to narrow the scope of you search be correlating all three
tables. If only the Henry’s and Lamb’s know each other prior to emigration,
then two attached tables will be of value. As I was typing this, I realized
that it would be trivial to construct a set of Truth Tables, which would test
both theories on a county by county bases. This table considers both forms of
the Coogan/Cogan name together but you can just as easily create a table,
which will test each surname variant. The attached Truth Table, eliminates 9
counties from consideration using for the “All 3” test. You could eliminate
even more Counties if Cogan were dropped from consideration. But, remember if
your Coogan came from a County where no Coogan’s owned property, you could
inadvertently drop that County from consideration; this is a property tax
record not a census record. The Truth Table is complex and must be viewed
using Excel or Lotus, so you will have to copy and past the data to a file
with a “CSV” suffix. Hope this helps.
In your posting to this forum, you have mentioned three male given names:
William, Joseph and Thomas. I omitted Henry because I assume that it was his
mother’s surname. As the Irish are very “traditional” about the selection of
given names, you may want to investigate these three names in combination
with the Coogan/Cogan surname. It is possible that there are other
Coogan/Cogan family members recorded in Griffith’s with the same name. I
would strongly recommend that you get a copy of the CD from Family Tree Maker
and investigate this possibility, as there at least 52 names on this list.

In Reply to: Coogan/Cogan - County in Ireland? by Carol Coogan of 11191
Using Griffith’s valuation to generate a list of all property owners with the
surname Cogan and Coogan, you can produce a table, sorted by surname and
surname counts in descending order, which shows where the two names occur
most frequently. The following table can be read directly into Excel or
Lotus, just copy the text between the “Start/End” lines and past it into a
file with a “.CSV” suffix (i.e. COOGAN.CSV).

======== End Of CSV Formatted Data ========
The two surnames while having a common linguistic origin have very
distinctive distribution patterns. Please remember that while there is a
22.939% chance that your Coogan ancestor came from Cork, there is also a
81.061% chance that they came from some other county. I also had Excel add
the Province for each County, to help us Yanks, who are not as familiar with
Irish geography as they should be.
