Thanks to PML and Phyllis' message, I have belatedly woken up to the fact
that there is now a Cogan mailing list!
So here is a bit about my Cogan family from Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.
John Cogan appears in the 1820 census in Sandy Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.
It seems quitel likely that he is the same person as the John Cogan who
appears in the 1810 census in Bedford Co., Pa.
(To make matters simple I am spelling the name "Cogan", but prior to, say,
1840 it often appears as Kogan, Kogen, etc.)
John Cogan had a large family. Among his children were probably (all dated
marriages in Tuscarawas Co.):
Jacob, m. Lydia Sells 1813, appears to have gotten in some sort of
legal/financial mess, and disappears from the records ca 1835
Margaret, m. Phillip Kline/Cline 1817
Daniel, m. Ann Charlton 1825 and was later in Stark Co., Ohio and/or
Stuben Co., Indiana
Samuel, m. Margaret Kline/Cline 1833. He d.1840. His son William H. died
1864, killed in the Civil War.
Elizabeth m Alexander Caldwell
John, m. Elizabeth Berkheimer 1827
Joseph, M. Sarah Steelsmith ca 1835; later in Carroll & Pike Cos.
Michael, by 1850 in Carroll Co, by 1870 in Liberty Twp., Jackson Co.,
Ohio and died there ca 1892. Michael is my gg-grandfather: Michael ->
Solomon (b.1839 Carroll Co., Ohio) -> Landis (b.1873, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio)
-> Howard (b. 1907, Portage Co., Ohio)
Catherine, m. John Kline, Jr.
?Martha, unmarried
It is most likely that this family was of Dutch or German ancestry, and are
not related to either the English Cogans of Somerset Co or any of the Irish
Cogan families.

Subject: Roll Call-COGAN,
Well, Jim, once more its you and I. Are we the only 2 Cogans on earth?
HARDLY.....you just haven't heard from ME yet!! So here goes. I want to
run this one by you for your thoughts and comments.
I've been chasing a John Cogan who lived in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio about 1800.
Figured he was Irish or whatever.......and that was that.
But look HERE what's been turned up!
A Johannes Kooken showsup in Pennsylvania about 1730......
Find him again as Johannes Koocken..... more specifically in Montgomery Co.
Find him as John Kogen in a list of Associated Brethren of Skippack (PA)
In 1742 find him described as "Coken, the saddler from Schippack came here
for a visit."
and again as John Kocken.....and Cogin and Cogenin and Koggen and Goggan
None of these guys appear to be Irish....or whatever......
More than likely....DUTCH or GERMAN!! Probably Mennonites.
They continue on ----casually spelling the name every which way until it
finally settles down to COGAN....and when they finally get to Ohio, it seems
to have stuck....
How's THAT for messing up all your pre-conceived ideas!! haha!
I understand all about how names changed....and how they depended on a
church clerk somewhere to spell what he heard....etc.etc.......but THIS one
is a real kicker.(even though it seems very well documented by a cousin in
Australia and another in Mass.)
I throw it out for a little bit of fun on this list.....and would LOVE
hearing from y'al!
Phyllis in Atlanta
so isnt the other five lists i get lol anyways at least it works

Jim, I notice the list is up for adoption. You should go for it! My only
expertise is that I am indeed a certified Cogan, although my birth cert also
says I am 41 which just can't be true!
eileen
p.s. eileen is Irish right? well, there ya go!
listen in mass they are mostly interchanged with coogan but i'll check
kogan
no was to being Irish my grand mother said it was French-Irish like darcy but
it has ties to all the keltic nations like my other two names Denning and
Dever. you can argue what nationality but if you really want to know you
should pick up a book called America BC by Barry Pell of Harvard probably the
worlds best linquigst. he talk about the keltic language Olgham which didnt
use vowels so it probably was cgn or kgn and people just added vowels when
they were adapted

This comes out of left field for me. what with states collecting sales
tax, and the ongoing proposal to charge for access AND email, the net is
surely under attack.
