Have you considered autosomal DNA? It can be done by men or women, and it tests your mtDNA as well as every single chromosome that you have (x,y if you're a man, and all 23 of your autosomes). I tested through 23andme, and I have been very excited with my results.
I am a Montgomery Co., Ohio Coffman descendant, but your names are not familiar to me, though they very well could be related. DNA would be able to tell. My 5th great grandparents were Daniel Coffman and Mary Stauffer, Pennsylvanians who came to Montgomery Co., Ohio by 1820. Henry Coffman, a man aged 45 , was living next to Daniel and his family in 1820, and very well could be Daniel's father, or perhaps an uncle, older brother, etc.
Daniel and Mary Stauffer Coffman's daughter, Rachel Coffman, was my ancestor. She married three times: (1) Samuel Holsapple, (2) Elias Ellingsworth (3) Israel Landis.
I'd love it if you would consider taking a 23andme DNA test. If you are interested, please let me know. Thanks so much!

Just remember that y-DNA testing has established that the relationships between a number of the early colonial immigrants listed in this book is incorrect. There are a number of unrelated immigrant lines who came to colonial America. Some of these extended family lines included Amish, Mennonite, and Lutheran immigrants. Current information for some of the extended family trees can be found as part of the Kauffman surname project at FamilyTreeDNA.com

Karen,
Have you identified which immigrant your Coffman line is associated with? The Kauffman/Coffman surname project is looking to have more early Virginia/Maryland based Coffman's tested to see which family they are associated with.
See the Kauffman surname project at FamilyTreeDNA.com

Hi, Karen,
Sugar Islander, who is a descendant of Deborah Coffman and Harry Hiser has recently sent for the autosomal and mtdna tests at Ancestry.com, so we may have some great new leads and potential confirmations (or not) in a couple of months. I am hopeful, though.

Hi....
I believe I am a descendent of Rachel Shoemaker and John Coffman. However, I come through the male side of the family. I have not done the mtdna testing.
My gggrandfather was John F. Coffman who married Mary Ellen Turpin in Illinois. John F. Coffman was a son of John and Rachel Coffman.

Message Board Post:
Hello,
I am looking for direct female descendants of Rachel Shoemaker, who married John Coffman in Virginia, and moved to Ohio about 1819. Their daughters include the following:
Sarah (c1802) m. Absalom Byerly;
Hannah (c1803) m. Frederick Chrisman Fox and John Roberts;
Margaret (c1804); (died in Virginia c1817)
Elizabeth (c1806) m. William Norris. They appear to have had daughters Julia Ann, Sarah J., Susanna, and Anna.
Deborah (c1808) m. Henry Hiser;
Nancy (c1815).
I am hoping that one or several of the descendants of these daughters may have done mtdna testing.
I believe that my 4th great grandmother is Rachel Shoemaker Coffman's daughter Rachel Coffman, who married George Norris in Montgomery County, Ohio on 29 October 1826. Her sister Elizabeth married George's brother William in 1825. What appears to be a sibling of George and William (Harriet) married a John Snyder in 1824. Rachel Coffman Norris eventually married Andrew Archibald Bray, the widowed father of her daughter in law, Emmeline Bray Norris (wife of John C Norris). Rachel moved to Madison County, Indiana, after this marriage.
Daughters of Rachel Coffman Norris Bray that I have found so far are as follows:
Mary (c1833) m. James G Fulton and had daughter Nora Fulton (c1870);
Elizabeth Ann (c1840) m. John Brooks and had daughters Fannie, Anna, Ellen, Mary E., and Dolly. Dolly Brooks married William Fleming and had a daughter Mary Fleming.
Because there appears to be no will or guardianship papers for George Norris, after his apparent death about 1839 in Montgomery County, I am hoping to verify my connection to this family line through mtdna testing. My last known female ancestor is Harriett Norris Cottrell, who I believe is Rachel's eldest child.
My maternal haplogroup (full sequence mtDNA) is H3 -T152C1. Most people don't do the full sequence mtdna, so any female descendants of Rachel Coffman, her sisters, or her mother Rachel Shoemaker should all, at least, be in the H3 mtdna haplogroup, if I have finally found the correct family line.
Thank you very much for any help you might give.
