There are about 5000 Coffman families in the United States of America. Thier ancestry as COFFMAN's does go back to Europe. Do not be confused by the name Kaufman. Most Coffman's are not of Kaufman ancestry.
There are a large number of Coffman's buried and living in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Texas. Though they have common last names they are not related. Example in Hardin County, Kentucky, USA there were two Abraham Coffmans who seem to arrive in that state at about the same time period and have caused much confusion because they are not related.
Keep trying, stick with what you know. Good luck.

ADAMS COUNTY, COLORADO - Michelle E. Brown, 61, died at her home on December 4, 2011. She was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 11, 1950. She was the oldest child of Joseph and Patricia Robertson.
Michelle attended Graham, Texas public schools and graduated from Graham High School in the Class of 1968. She was very active in High School, writing a column for the local newspaper, participating in band, orchestra, student council, and was a foreign exchange student in Sweden. Following graduation, she attended the University of Texas at Arlington.
Michelle found a career in the publishing industry, becoming an expert typographer and designer. She would also teach herself programming and become proficient and in demand for translating documents and data between different programs and platforms. Michelle was an early adopter of Desktop Publishing and owned one of the first business' catering to this market in the Denver area.
Michelle was truly a multi talented woman. She enjoyed cooking her Mom's recipes so much that she updated and reprinted her favorite cookbook three times to give as gifts. She would also create family calendars complete with the previous years family photos. Michelle also was an avid genealogy sleuth. After a debilitating stroke in 2001, as part of her self-therapy, she rewrote and published a 400 page history of her ancestors. Her genealogy bug was a perfect fit for her love of travel, taking her from dusty courthouse basements to long abandoned cemeteries. Whenever possible, she was sure to take along a grandkid or two on these trips to share in the discovery of a great BBQ in Texas or perhaps an idyllic swimming hole in Arkansas. She had a natural ear for music, often playing a favorite tune on her piano from memory, or teaching her grandkids chords on the guitar. Michelle also enjoyed sewing, her family looked forward to new pajamas - sometimes with matching rag dolls, a!
t Christmas.
Michelle is survived by her husband, Doran Brown and four sons, J. Bruce Jr and his wife Vonda, Kenneth, D. Scott and Daniel and his wife Julie. Also surviving Michelle is James Bruce Elkins, her son's father, all reside in the Denver area. She is also survived by 10 much loved grandchildren and was blessed with her first great-grandchild this year. Also surviving are four sisters, Cynthia, Martha, Patricia and Ann, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.
Her funeral service will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church, 4881 South Acoma St, Englewood CO at 4:00 pm on Friday, December 16, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts may be made in her name to The Georgetown Historical Society in Georgetown, Colorado, where she spent many enjoyable days with her family and friends.

Beats me - the ones I'm tracing are in Virginia, mostly to the west but not over into WV. I've travelled up the line to the Revolutionary War, at which point they were in eastern VA - consistently 'Coffman,' with nary a 'K' or mention of PA in sight. However, that doesn't mean some gallivanting spark of a Coffman / Kaufman didn't move to eastern VA from Lancaster County and start this particular branch. I haven't found enough evidence yet...

I see this is an old thread, but for what it's worth - what we were told is that 'Coffman' spelled this way (as opposed to 'Kaufman' or 'Kauffman' or other variants with 'K') likely derives from 'Cofferman.' The cofferman was the person in the ancient tribes or clans who kept the coffer - the group's funds - and dispersed them as needed. I suppose that's equivalent to today's university bursar, or the purser for a naval ship, something like that.

Dear daughter Andria:
I was well acquainted with your father thru our Coffman kinship, as well as SRT & SAR. I am glad that you are interested in taking up his work and I know that he would be proud.
The 1833 David Coffman (i) Will which was probated in 1835 in Lancaster Co. AL does not list a Jesse J. Coffman among the heirs, so he must be the son of David's son, David who is sometimes called David Harmon but is not listed as such in the Will...sometimes he is also noted as "Jr." but not in the Will. Perhaps this Jesse J. is a grandson of the elder David.
The "Harmon" name is not recognized by either DAR or SAR, albeit it may be correct, just not noted...
Both your Dad and I were members of the SAR thru the Patriot David Coffman of VA (b.ca1751), who was a Private in the Montgomery County VA Militia under Col. Thomas Marshall, father of SCOUS Chief Justice John Marshall. David's wife was Mary Anne Lovell, d/o Robert Lovell III & Sarah Marshall, sister of Thomas.
I shall be glad to give any data that I have to support this effort.
Gerry
