Yea!! Is someone else finally researching this line? I'm looking for info on: John Thomas & Georgine/Georgina [nee Johnson] Coffman, parents of Royal, Sherman and Chester. Royal is my grandfather sooo... that makes you and I second cousins? Royal did travel to the 1924 Olympics (as an alternate I think but I'm not positive). Story I heard was he gained too much weight on the voyage across the Atlantic to qualify. Seems to mesh with the story you've heard. If you would like to share info, please email me. My mom has a picture of Sherman wearing Royal's olympic shirt.

hello! Royal is my great uncle. He was my grandpa Sherman's brother. I never got to meet him but I do have a picture of him and my grandfather when they were small children. They had boxing gloves on. Royal was a boxer at one point I do know that. I believe he got invited to the olympics but never got to fight. Story goes he found out that all the food and drinks were free and failed to make weight. How true that is I don't know. Hope this helps.

Only 500 were pressed and there were 70 pre-publication orders, so when they are gone, they are gone...No future production is contemplated due to production run minimums. This is a great item to give to your Public Library.

Here is the 1880 Census for Margaret Coffman assuming Magie is Alice from the 1870 Census. John's age on this census lines up with the age of our John. I'm wondering if on the 1870 census, John's age was faded and someone wrote in the incorrect # of 14

I certainly agree with the age of Joseph and who ever answered the door gave the information, but the kids are always listed by age. Here is an 1860 census for Peter. also the age of John on that census doesn't correlate with the age of our John by 10 yrs. If it was within 5 yrs I wouldn't be surprised but there is a big difference btwn 14 and 4 lol.

I looked at the census, and zoomed in and enlarge and so forth...Here are my thoughts.
Joseph was 6 months. Reason I say this is if you look really close you will see the 6 is over the line with a 12 underneath.
My thoughts are the census people came to the door and who ever answered their questions just was naming people but not in any order.
So just my thought on this.

I found a census for Loudon Co 1870 that lists a Peter & Margaret Coffman and a John Coffman but the children's ages are split up which to me indicates John was not Peter's son or a son by a previous wife. I dont know. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&msT=1&gss=... This might be correct, My Grandfather (John's son) was Edward Daniel Coffman Sr. his son (my Uncle) was named after him and was called Ed Coffman......so it could have been one of them.
Can you forward the link for me to see?

I haven't been in contact with other family members. I don't really know anyone. I met a few at the family reunion 2 yrs ago when I took my dad. I wanted to go last year, but dad had passed away and I didn't really want to go by myself not knowing anyone. I'm going to try to go this year and also see if I can locate any records at the library or courthouse. I wish we knew where he was buried. My grandfather, Bill Snyder - 1st husband of Thelma Coffman - daughter of Evans Coffman was telling me the other day that he and Thelma visited John Coffman in Sweetwater late 40's early 50's. He said John told him he used to work at a hoisery mill. The 1910 Census for Hamilton Co shows reflects this info as well. http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=7884&iid=4449323_0063...
He said John was really old then, which would indicate he could have died in Sweetwater. I haven't located his death certificate yet tho. He told me the Coffman ancestors were Indians and avoided the Trail of Tears march by hiding in the mountains.

I do not know where John is buried, I know where Algie is buried, I have photo's of her stone. She is buried next to my Grandfather and Grandmother (Edward Daniel Coffman and Vallie Pearl Burris Coffman).
I have not had time to work on the tree in quite a while but hope I can resume it this month. Was having some work done on the house and all of my family tree info is packed in rubbermaids. Work has just finished so now I have to unpack and get set up again.
I had been told that Algie was Cherokee, either 1/2 or full. Cannot understand why John wasn't buried with Algie or vice versa, have you been in contact with any other family members to see if someone else knows anything?

I am a gr gr granddaughter of John Coffman via Evans Devaney Coffman. I've been working hard to find the parents of John and Algie Mosier Coffman. I'm 90% positive I've located the parents of Algie and possibly found the parents of John. I started my search with the marriage record for John and Algie.
They were married in Loudon Co. 1889. The 1880 census for Loudon Co lists John Coffman son of William & Louisa Coffman who fits the age of our John Coffman. I located a marriage source for William and Louise for 1869 which indicates she is not John's mother. The 1860 census reflects William Coffman married to Susan, from that I determined she is possibly John's mother, but not positively. ////////// MARRIAGE TO ALGIE http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=tnstatemarriages&h=2527243&... ////////// 1880 CENSUS FOR LOUDON CO http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&h=16196161&ti=... ////////// 1870 CENSUS FOR MONROE CO

I haven't been able to find William & Susan on a census prior to 1870 yet tho.
